WORLD JUMP # 1: EL MINHA.
![]() ![]() welcome to el minha. It will happen at random- you could be asleep, or wandering the Temple, or a variety of other options. It will feel a little strange, like a sudden warmth spreading across your skin, and then your bracelet will light up and a semi-familiar voice will be heard. I hope you are able to help the people of El Minha! And oh- in case I didn't mention it already, water is very, very valuable here. And then you will blink, and it will be bright. Bright, and warm, as you are standing just inside the grand walls that protect the impressive city before you. At your hip there will be a small bag with a few bits of coin - nothing too crazy, and definitely not enough to last you the entire stay (which...you're not exactly sure how long it will be), but enough to get started. Your presence brings a couple of glances, a stare or two, but overall the city seems to continue on with its day. Welcome to the Red Desert, the city of El Minha. ![]() THE PALACE After a few hours of being within El Minha, the King has heard that a large amount of travelers are now wandering within the city limits. An audience is called in front of the Royal Palace, and King Kathashun steps out onto the dias. He is dressed rather plainly, for a monarch -- a purple robe, with some gold bangles and bracelets, but no ornate crown or anything like that. However, when he appears, the natives around you grow quiet, at the presence of their King. ![]() Welcome to the heart and soul of El Minha - a massive outdoor market in the center of the city. Covered by fabric stretched between the buildings, this market feels almost like a city, or living soul, in and of itself. It is constantly moving, constantly evolving. Anything you could imagine is for sale here - spices, jewelry, weapons - whatever you’re looking for, anything at all. While you won’t necessarily find specific items from your home, you can find any matter of similarly made or crafted ones. Think cheap knock-offs, or unnecessarily well-made versions, because they can vary widely. There can also be items of some level of magic, though nothing particularly strong or overly impressive. (feel free to ask the mods on the previous ooc post about if an item is too over-powered to be found in the market - and also know that there’s always the chance you could find it in the underground. It just depends on how determined you are to track it down.) Stalls can range from cobbled together boxes and goods to grand, incredible stands - it all depends on what you’re looking for, and how long you’re willing to look. There is no map here, so tread lightly! ![]() As the announcement from King Kathashun comes to an end, all members of the Circle will be communicated - in one way or another - the direction to the Sparkling Sapphire. Free housing, you’ve been told. All you have to do is go, give them your name, and let them know you are part of the group that King Kathashun has directed here. ![]() THE FIGHT RING The ring itself is somewhat on the outskirts of town - a colosseum-esque collection of buildings that watch over a pit-like arena. The buildings protect the Fighting Ring from any outside eyes, or any unwanted attention, as this area is solely under the command of The Syndicate. Anyone is allowed inside, as long as you don’t cause any problems and don’t start any trouble. There are a number of what you can assume are Syndicate-employed figures that are constantly canvasing the area as well, so don’t expect to be able to sneak in unless invited or allowed. ![]() The Golden Phoenix is the central location of the Syndicate . . . and locals will make absolutely no effort to hide that fact from the Circle members. However, people don't seem to be afraid to go, though you definitely need to have coin to get through the door. Additionally, please feel free to write up and work with your own prompts! These are presented as jumping off points for your characters, not limitations. The idea of this world- as with all the others- is to explore. There will be some NPCs interacting with characters as well, so keep an eye out for those as well! If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask them back on the mod questions thread back in the OOC post from before! From this point forward, the Circle has become involved with the political stasis and climate of El Minha. What your character finds out, decides, and does from here on out will affect the future of this city- one way or another! But what you do is completely up to you. What you discover, explore, and uncover in this city will be yours to discover, explore, and uncover. Who knows what you might find? :) |
the grand market;
when he spots jing through the crowd, he perks up considerably and hurries over to her side. ]
Hey! Hey! You're part of the group, right? [ she must be- daylight thinks he's seen her around the temple. never got around to properly meeting her though.
let's change that! ] I'm Daylight. Do you need any help?
no subject
Daylight. The translation magic that had carried over from their time in the temple through the watches they're wearing renders that more poetically as 'Sun's shining' and she definitely appreciates how appropriate that is, seeing the brightness of his - was it armor or actually part of Daylight? she's not ready to rule out either, made out of a material smoother even than lacquered wood, polished to a mirror-bright shine.
She can draw no immediate conclusions as to age or status, so she errs on the side of caution and formality, sweeping her skirts aside and curtsying low as he gets closer to her.] Lin Xinyao. A pleasure to see you here, [only the slightest hint of hesitation, as she struggles internally for an appropriate title and ends up deciding to take her cue from him] Daylight.
[She straightens again, tilting her head back slightly to smile more steadily up at him.] I was planning to just browse the market for a bit, but I would be very glad for your company, if you're not busy. [It would definitely keep pickpockets and ruffians away.]
no subject
still- daylight remembers to be polite and so he gives a bow in return to the curtsy she gave to him, faintly recalling that's something you do with ladies in these sort of situations. while not as graceful or fluid as her movements, daylight makes up for with enthusiasm (of course) and energy. it's always exciting to meet new faces, more so when they're nice as her! ]
I would love to keep you company! [ he knows by now that his presence can deter even the most determined of pickpockets. if sticking by her side makes her trip here to the marketplace a better experience than he'll see what he can do. ] Feel free to call me 'Day' too. I know my full name is kind of weird to humans, miss. Lady. Ma'am. Whichever you prefer.
[ just to be on the safe side. ]
no subject
Your name is lovely, Daylight. I suppose you could call me Miss Jing or Miss Lin [that one still doesn't quite flow naturally], if that's easier for you as well.
How are you enjoying El Minha so far? [Just...making polite conversation with a friend while strolling down these market streets; she's enjoying the peace from strangers not quite working up the nerve to bother her, and hopefully he can hear her despite the height difference.] Is it a very different place from your home before our erstwhile hostess brought you to the Temple?
no subject
Alright, Miss Jing! It's an honour to meet you. [ he beams down at her, pleased as punch to meet another new friendly individual in the group. everyone he's met so far have been really nice but something about miss jing is kind of familiar. he's not sure what it is - maybe it's her behaviour? how she acts? - but he likes it a lot and his winglets flutter more often while he interacts with her..
he responds with enthusiasm to miss jing's questions, his head bobbing up and down in affirmation. ] It's been great so far! Definitely different from where I was before coming here. I was, um, on a starship before my arrival. The Lornful Light. My dad used to own it and I'm working on it now while we travel space to help others out and have adventures.
[ the very condensed version of the events that took place between his running away from neutral grounds and proving that he should stay on the ship. ] What about you, Miss Jing? It looks like you're okay with what's going on!
no subject
That seems like a very worthy goal. It sounds as though you would be of great help to your father in your travels together. [The way he'd phrased it - "travel to help others and have adventures" - reminds her so much of her own adopted brother and his son that she can't help a slightly wider smile.]
Does it? In a way this is all an exciting adventure for me. I used to travel myself, when I was much younger, between the villages in my home country, but it has been a long time since I've been able to do that.
no subject
My dad isn't on the ship. [ he flashes miss jing a smile, trying his level best to keep his tone light and even. last thing he wants to do is worry her when they're somewhere new and exciting. no need to be a sad bore, right? ] He's... He's not around anymore. That's the price for helping others out, you know? Gotta take risks for others.
[ and with the grace of a clumsy rhino clunking about a quiet hallway filled with delicate ware, day tries to change the topic and he sees the chancer for it soon enough: ] And that sounds so cool! Why did you travel travel to the villages? Who did you meet in them? Was it fun?
[ well the last question is rather silly to ask. he likes to think it's fun. it has to be fun. why else would anyone bother to pack their things and plan a long trip? the idea of doing anything else for traveling is a baffling concept to him. ]
no subject
I was - am, I suppose - a physician. Back home, not every small village had access to a doctor or herbalist. I used to travel with my old teacher, helping as many people who were sick as we could, staying within a few days travel of home. When I grew older, I met another friend who took me much farther - to distant provinces and even big cities. That was...that was much more fun. [For a while, though her smile up at Daylight is completely genuine. Fun is not a word she's accustomed to using, except with her son, and it had been so long since it had been an option.]
no subject
Oh wow. That sounds really neat! [ it honestly does to him. he's a big believer of feeling good by doing good. it must be nice to go from place to place, helping out those who were in need of aid. ] Sounds like you did a lot of good with your teacher and friend.
... But you're talking about it all in the past tense. You don't do that anymore? [ is she retired? like heartline back on the lornful light? ]
no subject
[She can almost say that without pause now, smiling naturally:] So compared to you, I think I'm a little bit out of practice. But since Astoria has given me the opportunity again, I'll try my best to enjoy it a little.
no subject
Helping your friend's sister was a really nice thing of you to do. [ he had been all but raised on the notion of loyalty and helping others. hearing this story warms up his core and causes the blue of his optics to become near white when the light they exude grows ever brighter. ] I can see why Lady Astoria picked you for this.
[ daylight's winglets are becoming a bit of a hazard for the passerby around them now. seeing how erratically they flutter in his excitement while he speaks with miss jin, the gold-coloured metal continuing to catch the rays of the sun over and over again in the jittery movements. ]
Is that why you're in the market? Looking for supplies or new materials to help you with your job?
no subject
[And also she's being a little nosy and keeping her eyes and ears open for interesting occurrences...]
no subject
more so if they're from a very different time. ] If it's not rude or anything, Miss Jing, but can I ask what year is it for you back home? Is that why we're snooping about the market so much? To see if anything is similar to your equipment?
[ in order to make it not too awkward, he adds, ] It's around 2238 for me.
no subject
['Snooping'...] There are many interesting items here, though I can't even begin to imagine how to use some of them.
no subject
[ if the appearances are anything to go by, obviously.
when he hears her last comment, daylight perks up in excitement. a cautious sort of excitement however. like he's unsure if he should excited at all. ]
... Maybe I can help you out in looking for supplies? I'm not an expert in it or anything but I Granny Ruby and Auntie Softlight taught me first aid stuff. [ he isn't the best at that stuff but he knows enough to patch himself up in a pinch if it was minor cuts or wounds. ]
no subject
[She honestly can't even guess how things coincide, to be honest. After a couple hundred years, a lot of things just become very nebulous "future things". The idea of having a semi-native guide - or at least less of a blind-leading-the-blind situation - is very exciting to her at least.
Actually, she has another question, that hopefully isn't rude:] Are the supplies you learned about from your family very different from what most people here would use?
no subject
he's trying really hard to resist the urge to point out stuff he knows and how they're different from the items back in his universe. auntie breakthrough taught him by now that pointing is rude and he apparently can't do that. ]
I guess the politest way to describe the stuff here is that its... old where I'm from, time period wise? A lot of stuff where I'm from is more advanced [ he tilts his head, trying to find something to say that doesn't sound breathtakingly rude. ] But the way they're living here is similar to my hometown, Dust Tumbles. Running for shade and importance of water and all.
[ and liveliness. it is very, very lively. ]
no subject
I think these things are as far away in time for me as they are for you, though perhaps approaching from opposite sides. But it's easier to remember than to fabricate, sometimes.
Was your hometown also a trading center, like this? You said you and your family were used to flying in space... [Turning entire planets into places very much like small towns used to be, by her guess.]
no subject
Well- Mom was and I am, technically. Dad was from another planet.
[ ... miss jing probably knows, day. considering the drastic difference in your appearance and hers. ]
Dust Tumbles wasn't a trading town but it was really busy when I was growing up there! Especially during the Foundation Festival when everyone wanted to be there for the food and music and flowers. [ he sounds both proud and nostalgic while he speaks about the town, recalling his times growing up there and the festivals he could recall with clarity, the music and noise and excitement both overwhelming and exciting for him.
his core suddenly spins, uncomfortable and wistful at the realisation it's been a long time since he's laid optics on his hometown. he keeps talking, stumbling a bit on his words in the process. he thinks the more he thinks, the more he can ignore the tug of homesickness. ]
My auntie and my uncle's organisation is founded there and it's, like, super important. So lots of people were always visiting it whether it was for work or because they wanted an interview or autograph or say thanks.
no subject
Ah, so it was famous for something that had actually been done there. [She's...also a little curious about what exactly you eat but can't think of a polite way to ask, so she'll hold that in reserve for later.] It's nice when everyone can get together for a celebration, to see old friends and family and be happy together.
Your family sounds amazing, Daylight. Do you mind if I ask exactly what their organization does? It must be something very important or good, if so many people admire its accomplishments.
no subject
[ it really is. in dust tumbles, almost everyone knew about nodice and his family from where he’s back home, meaning there was no real chance for him to talk about them lest he get accused of being too proud or arrogant of his family ties. on neutral grounds, he was too busy following his schedule and studying to even sit down and think about the group.
on the lornful light it’s… it’s complicated.
so the fact miss jing is interested at all and seems willing to hear his endless chatter is exciting for day, if the giddy fluttering of his winglets are anything to go by. ] Auntie Laura and Uncle Leeds founded NODICE. It stood for— [ deep gulp of air! words incoming! ] —Neutral Organisation Defences for Intergalactic Catastrophes and Emergencies. It specialises in mounting emergency rescue and services for those in need, no matter what, so there were days they just had to get people out of a flooded area and then there were days that they had to help in a hostage crisis! It was really cool.
Dad used to be a soldier but he became a captain of his very own starship after the Legacy War ended and he decided he wanted to explore the stars and help others out too. Mom used to be the liaison but she decided to step down and focus on bigger stuff like intergalactic politics. She was the first Earth Representative for the Galactic Union of Worlds. It’s this interstellar organisation that’s supposed to help each other out in crises and stuff like that. She helped found it and everything!
[ two things become very apparent in daylight’s ramblings:
one: he can talk. he can talk a lot. complete with excited hand gestures.
two: he seems fond, very much so, about his family. the more he speaks of them, the more his expression becomes nostalgic and wistful and homesick. especially when he gets to his parents. ]
no subject
That is a truly admirable purpose. To travel through such a big place and provide aid to those who need it can be no easy task.
[Though...] Is there a reason your Aunt and Uncle had a found an entire organization to handle this work? It seems that providing the resources and people to respond to disasters such as this should come from the local governments in the places that were affected.
[Pause.]
Though...I can understand that this might not always be ideal. [In which case, she has to applaud the efforts of a group of apparently ordinary citizens with no official mandate or responsibility to others taking the lead to accomplish the tasks that should have fallen on those in power.]
So you come from a family of remarkable individuals, Daylight. [Sympathetically, and with a note of additional empathy, as though she knows the feeling all too well:] It must be difficult sometimes, being separated from them by such great distances. [Including in the metaphorical sense.]
no subject
important cities needed attention. ('like fucking applegrove,' daylight could all but hear his auntie laura hiss, her words (and disdain) clear as day.) ]
Then it started getting bigger and more important when more lots of folks started to join the group, believing in their cause or trusting them to do what's right for other folks. [ like auntie breakthrough and uncle kindsguard, if the stories are to be believed. ] They actually got in trouble a few times for apparently going over the chain of command in some stuff. It's why they had to expand and petition for official affiliation to the United Council of Countries at some point.
[ he had watched those hearings in the past, looking up at the screen in awe as his auntie and uncle battled the union's representatives to be recognised and funded.
the sweet smile on his face dims a little bit when he gets to his family at long last. he looks both forlorn and resigned while he speaks. ] I'm used to it, honestly. Distance and... other things keeping us apart. Most of my immediate family is, um, not around now. I think in a month or so, it'll be the anniversary of Uncle Leeds’ passing.
no subject
Would you mind if I asked how it is that some of your family has passed on? Was it before you started traveling on your ship, the Lornful Light?
no subject
if anything - he becomes sadder and becomes more obvious in his sadness, with how his winglets begin to dip out of view. perhaps mirroring his sobering up considering the current topic at hand. ] Like- Long before I decided to join dad's starship.
Most of them passed away from old age, like Auntie Laura and Uncle Leeds. Which, you know, makes sense. Dad always looked out for others until the bitter end and Mom... I'm not really sure about mom. [ he tilts his head, trying to recall the exact details of how his mom had passed away. the most he can really remember is a doubtful, ] Something about stress? Her heart had never been good. Not after dad died on a mission.
... Sorry. [ he ducks his helm now, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly while sending miss jing an apologetic look. ] I bet this is all depressing to hear, Miss Jing. [ the last thing he wants to do is bother someone and he can't help but feel awkward for spilling this all out on the poor lady. she just want to find stuff like forceps and tongs and stuff. she shouldn't be saddled with his grumblings. ]
