[open] come along for food
Who: Boreas and you!
Where: Kitchen
When: Lunchtime, early part of sick week 1
Rating: Nothing spicy here except food, maybe
What: Grumpy dragon dad cooks.
[ True to his message, Boreas can be found inside the Temple's rudimentary kitchen. He's cleared out a decent amount of space next to the oven, the carcass of a deer-pigeon fusion animal on the counter with half of the meat sliced off. A rich smell emanates from the brick oven where several cuts of meat are currently cooking - not-quite buttery, carrying notes of spice and zest.
He'll be cooking slices of the deerpigeon as people come, plating them when the juices have completely soaked in. The meat is a bit tough, which he has tried to remedy by cutting slits in the meat in hopes that the residual fat would soften the muscle. What might stand out to others is the manner that it has been seasoned with - the meat is rubbed with butter and some oil to make up for the leanness of the meat, but there is also noticeable amounts of berry paste stuffed into the steak. The texture of the paste is much like pesto, along with how little it has been added, clearly evident that it is meant to serve as seasoning. If one licks a bit of the paste, they'll find that it's the source of the spiciness. It's a strange sort of flavour, but not entirely unpleasant - just unique. Mixed in with the paste are bits of something hard, possibly seeds. Biting them stings, like peppercorns.
Adults may be offered a glass of wine if they look like they need one. Otherwise, feel free to hang out in the kitchen while he cooks his kill. Ask questions, chat with each other, tell him stories while the temple flu isn't too intense.
Occasionally one might see him with his horns replaced by bunny ears. There's probably a reason to it but he's not telling you ]
[ ooc: feel free to tag each other as well! he'll just be around cooking until the meat runs out. if anyone has taste preferences he can try to accommodate them. if you'd like to do wildcards I'm game. hit me up on plurk or via pm ♥ ]

I am roasting something I hunted.
Tell me something about your home and I will give you a piece.

Is that what that is? ( a gesture to the berries. ) Or is that the approximation you were talking about?
( he's not going to just. up and ask if there are actual dragons, because he's a grown man and that's just not the sort of thing grown men do but inside there's very much a little kid's mantra of dragon, dragon, dragon and an insatiable curiosity about the possibility. surely no world would come up with the word, use it to describe something (spicy, probably? is that what he's smelling?) and manage all that completely independent of knowledge of the real thing, right? )

[ They're a jack of all trades, the small red berries that appear on what bush or vegetation that stubbornly clings to life in the frigid never-ending winter, red like blood, like gems. Good for spicing food, for treating lethargy; the lifeblood of the winter itself. ]
I've saved some of the pits, so we can grow some if the soil is willing.
[ Of course dragons are real. They are real, just like how the horns on his head are real. ]

( mako knows a little bit about gardening. mostly through nefarious means — his childhood was an awful lot of theft and people who lived in republic city who had small garden plots were the first to suffer for it. still. he picked up a few things. )
Are they named after real dragons?
( he's not crass enough to gesture to the man's horns, but. he has to know. )
no subject
[ The tone he uses is as if he doesn't acknowledge the possibility of giving up; that failure is not an option. ]
Yes, they are. In the mountains where they grow, dragons are the only creatures able to breathe fire. Thus the spiciness.

he holds up the teapot once he's poured his own, water sloshes on the inside. it's both invitation and offer, but really — it's the dragons that hold his attention. )
Have you met any? They're really rare in my world.
( there's a sanctuary for them in the fire nation, heavily guarded and patrolled, but. there aren't many. )
no subject
Thanks.
[ This place is hotter than Isaz, so he's been sweating a little. ]
I have met dragons. They live on the moon, and I live in a mountainous region. That place is high enough for them to fly over my nation. They usually keep to themselves, but the elder wyrms sometimes come to impart humans with their knowledge.
[ Well, half of that is fabricated, but he's been telling this lie for so long that it might as well be the truth. ]
no subject
it probably says a lot about the world he's from that hearing that doesn't really merit a significant suspension of disbelief. the legend of the girl who became the moon spirit has been passed around since he was a kid, and he's best friends with the avatar. mako is a healthy skeptic about a lot of things, but. moon dragons. seems reasonable. )
Wow. That's pretty cool. ( he is understating just how much, because he's mr. disaffected over here, but. fear not. inwardly, he is choc full of childish glee. ) What were they like?
no subject
After all, the miraculous legend of his homeland is something he's proud of, something he's helped build. ]
They live far longer than a human lifespan, so they have their own unique point of view about things. The younger ones are much like how kids generally are, but once they mature they aren't in a hurry about things anymore. Though, the reason they started interacting widely with humans was to inform them of impending disasters. As long as you respect them, they're generally benevolent. At least, that's for the people of mine kingdom.
[ Dragons possessed the original magic, thus they were incredibly hard to kill. It's not impossible however, and hunters have found their fortunes dogged by ruin afterward ]

Do they speak?
( because that really seems to be what all of that is implying. dragons are amazing creatures where he's from, but they're also... well, animals. they can't communicate in anything more than the basest of human ways, though the older they are the more they tend to exude wisdom. at least that's what he's heard. mako's never encountered any himself. )
no subject
[ It is a lot to take in, having a large adult dragon almost breathe down on you. There's the visceral fear of a prey animal in the face of an apex predator...
He folds his arms. It's been almost a century since Bahamut towered over him and threatened him to cooperate lest he be eaten alive, but that memory will remain with him for as long as he lived. The pressure that the elder wyrm exuded was more than palpable - a feeling of sheer terror that penetrated down to one's stomach and heart. The effect is there, even if it was only especially effective against him because he too bore a dragon's heart. ]
The younger ones take time to develop communication skills. I did teach a few myself, they're every bit as hard to work with as human kids.
no subject
I think it's kind of incredible that they'd listen to you at all.
( he knows it's the differences between worlds and all, but. dragons are sacred, essentially, to any firebender that respects the flames they wield. )
Are they elemental?
no subject
It is true that dragons are incredible and awe-inspiring - it's with their strength that he has been able to enact the change he wanted to see. To hopefully forge a world where both humans and dragonkind can live without fear of their land disappearing beneath their feet.
A shame that he's here, instead of back home. ]
Some are, some are not. Most of them are born with fire, but the ancient ones branch out to other elements like lightning or wind. It's the sort of wisdom that surpasses human lifespans. I don't really understand much of it myself.
[ ... that's not really true, but some information has to be kept secret for now. ]
no subject
mako shakes his head a bit, and leans against the countertop, his good hand curled around the mug's handle. )
I can't imagine a world like that. Where I'm from, they were hunted nearly to extinction. I've always wanted to see one up close.
no subject
Though, he's also aware how that's not the case for other worlds. If anything, it makes him pity those from Mako's world... and feel in part indignant for them. ]
If only one came to this world with me... then you could have met.
[ A shame, really. He purses his lips. ]
To have them hunted to death is a terrible crime. Some survived, i hope?
no subject
( it's a legend now, more than anything. how iroh protected them, and told the world of their demise so no one else would go looking. how they gifted fire lord zuko with a single egg. the dragon sanctuary in the fire nation is home to a few younger ones, but druk was the first one that left sun warrior territory.
also something... occurs to him. they've been talking for a while now, but mako still has no idea who this guy is. so. he holds out his hand. )
Anyway. I'm Mako.
no subject
[ He would help if he could. But he cannot, so the line of his interference is drawn there. ]
You can call me the Wintersmith. A pleasure to meet you, Mako.
[ Boreas takes the offered hand. His handshake is brief but firm; with conviction. ]
no subject
( once the handshake is finished, mako steps back into his own space. he really should be getting back to look after bolin, even though the promise of more storytelling is an awfully good incentive to stay.
but it's mako, and duty wins out over everything else. he sighs a bit. )
Anyway. I should be getting back, my brother's one of the one who's been hit pretty bad by this illness. But I appreciate your taking the time to tell me about the dragons.
\o/
No worries. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
[ With that, he folds his arms again, a usual posture for him. They should both get back to their self-assigned tasks ]
