[Maes goes back and forth on it himself. In some ways it is a comfort, but in others it is pure torture. A reminder of what he can't have and maybe never will again.
So right now he's leaning more heavily towards the "torture" part.

He lets out a heavy sigh when Keith confirms for him what he'd already assumed. Even now the smell is fading, though he can still hear soft, feminine voices drifting from the closed kitchen door.

[He almost adds that 'the last I saw her,' but there are some things he can't bring himself to accept. Sure, he's seen the proof of time passing in Roy and Riza's eyes and, more clearly, in Winry and Edward's heights. But he hasn't seen that same time pass for his little girl. So he's just going to keep it that way.]
