( wow she's so cute when she's flustered. oddly, her being caught off guard is what lets mako find his equilibrium. he was prepared to just... sink into the floor and die a slow, torturous death, but. he's gotten better about setting aside his own emotions when someone else's distress is worse. he takes a deep breath, and his shoulders settle back down to where they'd been before they tried to crawl up around his ears in embarrassment. )

It's fine. Here, sit down. ( he gestures for the nearby table, small as it may be. ) There's no reason we can't have something to eat anyway.

( sharing food isn't exclusive to dating, so. it's fine, right? right. )

My, uh, my arm's been doing really well. No complaints. You do good work.

[She...begins to relax as well, smoothing the back of her skirt down as she moves to take her seat at the nearby table. While this is not the dinner among friends she had anticipated and dressed for, it is still dinner with a friend, only a friend, and that is perfectly fine.

Even if Korra, and Bolin, for that matter (wherever he is) are thinking this is some sort of date between the two of them.]

Oh! That's marvelous. [She perks up at that, her blush slowly and certainly receding.] I am glad it's proven to be a longterm fix...there was a part of me concerned it would only be temporary.

[She motions for him to show her his hand, should her oblige her, to look it over for the sake of...well, seeing her handiwork. Even if it's entirely internal.]

My abilities seem to come and go at random. It seems to be that way with others.

( he holds it out to her, palm-up. the scars are still ugly and always will be, but he's less concerned about aesthetics than functionality. having his bending back is the miraculous thing. )

Yeah. My firebending cuts in and out too. But the effects of what I do with my bending don't seem to disappear when I lose them. Fires I've started still burn, or if I shape something out of rock. I made a dock down at the lake yesterday, it's still there.

( honestly, he's a little sunburnt from all the fun he and konoha had in the water. it felt weird to just... let go, like that. he hasn't been a kid in so long he thought he'd forgotten how. )

[Her own abilities, right now at least, are at a stand-still, so she can really only do a cursory look at his offered palm. But still, knowing that beneath the scars, he is healed. Fingers brush over his palm, and then, satisfied, she lets go and sits back into her seat.]

You made a dock? [There's a conversational lilt to her voice, amused. The awkwardness of this being a date (which! it still isn't.) completely dissipated.] That certainly comes in handy, considering the mermaids... [Said disgruntled, frowning a bit at the memory of having been dragged into said lake.]

Is bending earth much different than fire?

( he was mostly ignoring the mermaids, considering them to be something like spirits from his world. as long as he minded his own business they seemed content to mind theirs. but he does nod. even though it feels a little silly, because... he definitely just used it to canonball into the water like an absolute nerd. his expression goes through a few... interesting contortions before he manages to convince himself he doesn't. have to justify it to her. he doesn't have to explain why he wanted a day to just relax, he doesn't have to explain why he chose something childish.

deep breath. then he starts ferrying dishes to the table. most of it is fire/earth nation fusions, and he'd definitely given his best shot at the dish allura had described to korra, though with limited ingredients it may or may not be all that close. the commonality between the rest is that it's all a little... on the spicy side, because it's mako and even when trying to dial it back he usually still errs to the side of 'hot'. don't die, allura. )

Did you have a run-in with them? The mermaids, I mean.

( that sounds like a story. not necessarily a good one, by the slight downward quirk of her mouth. as he sits — )

Ah... they're pretty different styles, but not as much as, say, earth and airbending. It helps that my brother is an earthbending master, so I've been exposed to the styles and forms most of my life.
