[ mako so edgy........ but for real, zuko's brow furrows. while he's still wrapping his head around the idea of the future, some idealistic part of him is disappointed at the idea that people would still have to grow up without a real home. change doesn't happen overnight, but. ]

I see.

[ he frowns, but doesn't make any further comment. he has a feeling mako wouldn't want sympathy. it's probably a fact he's long reconciled with, like where zuko is getting to be with his own complicated past. ]

I've only redirected it. Uncle tried to teach me, but I was..... [ poignant pause here. iroh is still a sore spot; whenever he thinks of his uncle zuko always ends up reimagining himself betraying him. will he ever get a chance to apologize for what he did? etc, etc, monologue about how he let uncle down. ] I wasn't ready.

[ understatement. ]

[ if he mentions iroh he's totally getting a monologue. he hasn't monologued in a while, he has material now. ]

[ but is he ready? he doesn't know. it always blew up in his face... like everything else in his life, but he can recognize now what iroh had been saying --- that it was his inner turmoil, his shame, that held him back. his conflicting feelings. sure, he still has shame now -- for different reasons --- but he's come a long way. still, the only answer he can give is: ]

I don't know.

[ would mako teach him? zuko wouldn't be opposed to that, even if it isn't iroh. mako's plenty skilled and talented, as he's just proven. honestly, it's beyond impressive that he even knows how -- only a select bunch of firebenders can produce lightning. and zuko isn't even among those numbers. ]

But I'd be willing to give it a shot. [ a beat. ] You know... if you want to show me.

[ he sort of asked??? ]
