cavern explorations.

the depths below.
exploring the caverns.
All of you will have the same entrance into the caverns -- it will involve going underwater and traveling about one hundred feet through a tunnel which breaks into into a massive cavern, full of air. The breeze is mysteriously fresh, for being both underground and underwater, and before you are three massive dark tunnels. It's hard to decide which one to go toward, but inevitably, you are drawn toward a specific tunnel.

For your top level comments, include what group you are in your subject line. . You will be in the caverns for roughly one week's time in order to get to the information at hand. That doesn't mean you have to stay below that long, but be prepared to pack whatever you need in order to live down there for that long There will be fish to hunt in the waters and the water itself is fresh, but sleeping on the cold marble-like surface might suck, especially if you're wet. And . . . once you get into the meat of things, what are you going to find?
group a.

The tunnel by which group A travels down is narrow, to the point of claustrophobia. And along the way, you will run into several obstacles. You will have to travel through underwater tunnels that, again, are narrow and claustrophobic. Stalagmites and stalacites make navigating through the waters treachorous, and getting stuck is not an impossibility.

Additionally, as you move through the pathways (both water and not), you begin to notice little lights flickering in the water. At first, you think it may be crystals sparkling in the water . . . but upon closer inspection, you begin to realize that they are bioluminescent eels. How cool! However, about halfway into your journey, you begin to notice that theyre getting a bit . . . larger. And, should you allow yourself to be attacked by them, not only do they bite, they seem to suck out your energy. These eels feast on magical energy, and suffering a bite from one of these eels will completely eradicate your Astoria granted powers for five hours. Have fun with that.

Finally, at the end of your journey, you will reach what feels like a dead end . . . in that you come upon a small alcove type area, with no discernable exit. And, upon the far wall, you see what appear to be cave drawings. Intricately carved into the stone, with a language surrounding the pictographs that no one understands, are what appears to be two women. One has longer hair, to her shoulders, holding a white orb in her hand. The other, with cropped hair, appears to be holding a blackened orb in her hand. Their arms are intertwined, connected, but there is a large fracture in the rock, scorched across the woman drawn in white, as if someone (or something) has attempted to blast it to bits.

Eventually, upon some investigating, you come across words that you, somehow, do understand, scrawed in a messy text, carved into the stone. Those words?

group b.

The tunnels that Group B heads down are considerably wide, all things considered. Most of the journey in the tunnels for Group B is above-ground and doesn't involve going underwater . . . which may be a good thing, as the water pathways in this tunnel are deep. The water is still crystal clear, but you somehow still can't see the bottom of it. It looks as if it goes on forever . . . and ever . . . and ever . . .

Eventually, though, you come into a second massive cavern, with a huge underground lake. The lake is full of dark shapes that dart underneath the surface -- horses, with the tails of fish, as they pop up to the surface for a gulp or two of air. But when they notice the strangers on the shores of their territory, they circle ranks and edge themselves closer . . . and if you get too close to the shore, you may feel teeth sink into the edge of your coat and an abrupt tug to be pulled into the water.

To be clear -- the kelpies themselves are not particularly violent. However, they've never seen otherworlders like you before, and are definitely scared. Not fighting against them will ensure their slow trust, and they will generally leave you alone. But if you attack them? They'll fight back, and they will drag you down to the depths below without a second thought in order to protect their own.

Eventually, you come across a third massive cavern, with another underground lake. The water seems to sparkle with energy -- tiny lights dance across the water, skipping across the surface without a care in the world. Touching the water will result in temporary paralysis of whatever you use to touch it -- magic, so powerful that you cannot possibly comprehend it. The energy is too much to handle, and you, too, cannot see the bottom of this lake. However, scattered across the walls, are runes carved into the marble. It's a language you do not understand, but you do come across something that you manage to understand . . . tucked amongst the runic symbols:

group c.

Group C enters into a beautiful crystalized tunnel, with white crystals jutting out into the tunnel. It looks beautiful, but it makes for treacherous going -- the crystals are razor sharp, and sliding through them requires elegance and grace to avoid being turned into ribbons. Move slowly -- you need to in order to make it through this maze of crystals.

Eventually, you make it to a wider tunnel with various deep pools of water scattered along the floor. The pools seem to be endlessly deep, reaching to impossible depths that you cannot see. However, the pools seem to have an . . . alluring feel to them. You are drawn closer to them, curious, inquisitive . . . you want to get into them . . . and if you dip into the pools, watery arms of the sprites that live within these pools glide around you, and coax you into the depths below . . . but you feel calm, serene. Hopefully someone is looking out for you.

But as you move through the tunnel with the pools, you begin to notice signs of life. Not necessarily plant life, or animal life, but signs that people are here. There are footsteps from one pool to the next, wet markings that seem to be permanently wet no matter how much you wipe them away. There are watermarks along the walls, handprints against the marble. And as you begin to walk, begin to notice messages scrawled along the walls, carved deep into the marble.

Every single word is the same.

group d.

Unlike those below the surface, the lakeside shores of Lake Dona seem to be relatively peaceful. Nessie is lazily swimming around and offering rides to those that need it, and campfires are soon built up around this makeshift camp of those who are sitting around to wait. The network does work with those in the caverns, so keeping in contact is far easier than it was in Struxta!

However, in the last days of the investigation, as Group A, B, and C begin to discover the messages in the caverns, storm clouds begin to roll in. It begins to downpour, a frightening crack of lightning streaking across the side with alarming regularity. And, on the final day of the exploration, a voice seems to float through the deluge. And it isn't Astoria's. But it seems to be . . . odd. And suddenly, a message appears on your watches.

¿ɯǝ ɐǝɹɥ ʎon ɐɔu ˙nʎo ɥǝdl ʇo ǝuǝp ᴉ ˙ʎno ɥǝdl ʇo ɐʍʇu ᴉ ¿ɯǝ ǝɥɐɹ nʎo ɔuɐ

What in the hell could that be?

[He grasps her wrist back and firmly pulls her up, backing away once she's out to give her room to breathe.]

[How is he not surprised she's fought a kraken before.]

Table that story - I wanna hear it when we're not in danger of running into one down here.

[He glances back towards the water, where the disappointed eel is floating near the surface in hopes of a second chance, and shakes his head.]

...though I bet a kraken couldn't fit into these tunnels.

[To use the term uncanny valley wouldn't be preferable to Connor, made to integrate with humans as seamlessly as possible. He does possess a glimmer of awkwardness about him, though, betraying he's not quite as 'seamless' as he always wishes to be.

Regardless, he blinks as the fire goes out. Offers-]
We can see if any of the others can create a makeshift flame, if the campfire itself isn't preferable to you.

[And then answers the question, ever helpful.]

I work with local law enforcement. The Detroit Police Department, to be exact. [Chances are the name won't be recognized. It doesn't matter. He's detail-oriented.] I guess you could call me something of a detective, as that was the role I was designed for.

[The flash of light is almost searing even with his eyes closed. But it works, made obvious by the way he hold onto his pant leg is released almost immediately, coupled with a cry from what he assumes is the kelpie.

Somewhere behind him he registers a splash, but momentum has him hurtling forward, with no force to counter Arenvald as they both careen backwards on to the ground. There's nothing graceful about it, really. The side of Connor's face presses against his friend's chest as they land, his limbs sprawled out, but already a hand is trying to find purchase on the ground to push himself back up, blinking his eyes back open.]

It worked. [-he huffs out in a strained sort of way, a little disoriented, though feeling the press of limbs and probably an elbow beneath him.] Are you all right?

and here we all are, walking along under it. But besides some creepy eels and this message, there hasn't been anything too dangerous or sinister down here, oddly enough. Those mermaids sure seemed weird about this place too.

[ The sentiment is familiar, even if the voice isn't, but it's...oddly welcome somehow, too, given the person he most frequently hears this kind of thing from recently returned to their world. Seated on the ground and rubbing his hands together for warmth, Prompto looks up at the newcomer, his eyebrows lifting. ]

Iiiii could ask you the same thing!

[ Like, he could. But he's not going to. He's not sure what kind of point he's trying to make here, either. He knows he should eat, he just...doesn't want to make anyone else feel like they have to worry about him, either. ]

Just...unwinding a bit first.

[ They definitely looked like human faces, but more...ethereal. ]

The mess--oh, you mean mine? I was wondering if the phrase "beware the light in the dark" meant anything to anybody.

[Reinhardtzar can't sleep much down here either. Something about it being too quiet, even with everyone else shuffling around in their sleep.]

It's the only thing written down here that anybody can understand. Is there something similar where your group is?

[Miscreant? Connor blinks in surprise, then blinks again as water droplets roll down his face and catch against eyelashes.]

I-

[Connor kicks at the water, one arm sweeping forward to swim a few feet towards the edge. His free hand clasps at the lip of the lake, looking just as unflattering as Lucina right now.]

Because- because you were going to get pulled in, too. Better that only I take the tumble than the both of us.

[She's angry, and his processing works on all cylinders to parse this.]

I'm sorry you fell into the water after me, regardless. I... I wasn't fast enough, and I apologize.

[BECAUSE THAT'S THE POINT, RIGHT]

Like I said, we're fine. Please don't worry. I'd rather make sure you stay safe on the surface, anyway. You have Sumo to look after.

[Maybe he can't, but Connor will just repeat "it's fine" a thousand times over as retaliation.]

Even without the eels, getting lost down here if you wander away is a real possibility...

[Hopefully those who are, ah, more excitable or too curious for their own damn good can be scooped up before they get too far.]

And nope. Not even plant life. You'd think there'd be at least moss on the rocks or seaweed in the pools, right?
flamestrikes: (31)

[personal profile] flamestrikes 2018-10-09 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't "hear" it, exactly. It's written all the way down here in these caves, and is the only thing written in a language anyone can understand. Everything else is runes no one can make head or tails of.
flamestrikes: (28)

[personal profile] flamestrikes 2018-10-09 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Tried that.

[He'd gotten out of a few other tight spots by backing out the moment he felt he might not be able to squeeze through but. This one is different.]

Didn't work. I think the top half of this tunnel is narrower than it looks at this part.
flamestrikes: (16)

[personal profile] flamestrikes 2018-10-09 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
that would be a hell of a lot easier if I knew what it was warning for. A light in the dark could mean a lot of things. Literal, metaphorical...if they wanted people to listen they should have been clearer.]

A threat, then. Typically if they want to be helpful, people will provide more information... So you best be careful! Never know what might happen down there. I'd stay away from strangers and strange lights, if I were you. That's all I'm saying.
airgetlarm: (Arm yourselves... Okay no)

[ That's not reassuring???

airgetlarm: (I ask of you are you my Master?)

[personal profile] airgetlarm 2018-10-09 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
More than likely, its own holy light is reacting to the energies that are emanating from the cavern up ahead. It's a good a sign as any that we must tread carefully as we have been from the beginning.

[Never mind the kelpies, but yeah.]

And, it's probably worth going in the direction where the energy is the strongest.

[Bedivere frowns down at his palm, still doubtful of whether he can fully summon the innate power of his Noble Phantasm.]

... Arenvald? What were your skills and strengths did you have before arriving in the temple?

Yes, sorry-

[She wouldn't usually bother, but... now...]

I don't... know what it means, no. Isn't it usually good to find a light in the dark?

[Optimisfic, she goes straight to salvation when lost for her imagery, but... a barely audible gulp and a nod before she remembers its voice and turns the video on, pointing it towards the wall that says "She who lies here waits for the freedom she granted to so many men".]

We have this one...
airgetlarm: (I dare you to go out on a limb)

[personal profile] airgetlarm 2018-10-09 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh, that is very impressive to Bedivere who is acquainted with many Caster Servants who had their own variations of magecraft from divine abilities to elemental powers not unlike what he's witnessing from Mako.

But fire, he said?
]

Herding them to the side... That's a solid plan.

[A smile plays on Bedivere's lips, but he has to ask.]

Although if you say fire manipulation was what you originally have, then earth is not your natural element?
airgetlarm: (I ask of you are you my Master?)

[personal profile] airgetlarm 2018-10-09 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
[It occurs to Bedivere that he has also been doing a poor job in inquiring about the nature of people's original abilities if they had any before. It reinforces his idea that it was almost a waste of energy for Astoria to override the gifts they all had to begin with.]

So far, it only seems to be the kelpies. And they weren't malicious at least. But no less dangerous.

Forgive me, but I have done poorly in introducing myself to you and our other traveling companions. May I ask for your name first?

Better think quick, dumbass!

[ zero jumps before mordred can say anything that will anger her any further. or more like, she catapults herself directly at mordred. she doesn't quite land, more like half smacks into her, half lands on her. ]

Don't let me fall you idio–!!

[ she feels herself nearly fall sideways and clings to mordred for dear life, arms wrapped around her neck in a vice grip, legs wrapping around her waist instinctively as she fumbles to keep herself from slipping into the bed of spikes near the edge of where mordred stands. In this moment she looks a little bit like a murderous koala. ]

[ --ah, so much for her threat. She finds herself utterly neutralized when Zero wraps herself around her. It happens so quickly that she struggles to keep her balance, let alone mentally process this kind of physical proximity. What's making things worse is the fact that Zero won't stop shifting around, and the weird friction between their skin is only making her more hyper-aware.

UM??? ]

--H-H-Hey, be still!! And not so tight!! Are you a jezebel?!?! HEY!!!

[ Red-faced, Mordred stumbles around a little bit as she tries to find some balance again, but ultimately she slips and falls to the side, into a pit of spiky crystals. The good news is that these two idiots are so small and scrawny that they managed to avoid being impaled by any of them. The bad news? They kind of... can't move. Any attempt to move away from the other will result in being poked by something sharp. ]
