In the first place, he's always been the one moving from place to place, always the intruder in other people's lives even when his intention is to exist quietly on the outskirts and have nothing to do with anybody else. Flipping it the other way around, he would barely give strangers another thought, believing them neutral, if not friendly, until proven otherwise.
