[ The creature makes valiant effort, but weakened as it is, Connor had the advantage from that first crushing snap of his jaws. With it unable to truly find purchase or summon the effort to sap the life from Connor, the dog rends it apart, inky blackness dissipating into the water like so much smoke.

When the creature is no more, silence hangs heavy in the darkened alcove, made somehow louder by the raucous that preceded it.

It is a slow thing, the way life flows back into Arenvald, like water poured over a dried sponge. Nothing becomes noise, the muffled din of movement underwater. Noise becomes pain, sharp, stinging pinpricks in his shoulder. Pain brings memory, and on the back of that, fear. Concern. Connor.

He’s still stuck in the mire, though, as much as he wants to snap his eyes open and see if his friend is safe. The way he finally blinks awake is slow and hazy, eyes searching for Connor even as they try to focus. ]
