[Earth-1 got invaded by aliens once.

Zari doesn't remember it much - she was three at the time, and since the Legends were actively involved in punching them in the face, they never really traveled back to that part of the timeline. She did meet the Dominators later, in the form of the best friend of a tiny version of Ray Palmer, one of her best friends, who she misses more than words can say. These moments set up dominoes that would change the course of the world Zari lived in one day, that would set up ARGUS to gain their iron grip on the world, but that isn't the part that sticks with her at first.

That part is seeing the pieces of Ray in Tony.

She's made jokes in the past about Tony and Ray having similar paths. Before Tony got here, she and Steve would talk about their "tech guys" in loose terms. She's not going to say that they don't have their differences - Ray never worked in weapons beyond the ATOM suit, he just owned a massively profitable tech company that Felicity Smoak later ran into the ground after his "death," and Ray is Relentlessly Optimistic (yes those capitals are necessary) where Tony is self-deprecating and sarcastic, but at the core, a big part of him is the same.

They both suffered a loss that pushed them to make choices that they hoped would better the world, maybe even save it. They took that choice into their own hands, building their superpowers with intellect and elbow grease rather than coming into them by chance or having a higher power grant them to them, and Ray - dumb, beautiful, happy Ray - would have still, if given the choice between a nuclear explosion and death in the deepest expanses of space would choose space.

Some would say that it's just Ray wanting to be a hero for notoriety's sake. Maybe that's who Ray was, when he first got on the Waverider. But the Ray that he is now, the one who just wants to help people be better, would look at these glimpses of Tony's life and know exactly what to say. Something unreasonably hopeful but appropriate all at the same time.

Zari isn't Ray Palmer. But she can't help but snort at Tony's response.]

Past you was a smart guy. Shawarma is awesome.

[But on a more serious note:]

Seems like you were working your way back from Merchant of Death, though.
