He wakes up because the footsteps don't sound right. They're heavier, one side being favored more than the other. Then he smells the coppery tang that could only be one thing. Blood. He shoots up in bed so fast his side is awash with pain. He clamps his hand over it and breathes through it as he scans the area for the problem.
