A 'terrible' weapon can still kill you in the right hands. [the quality of the fighter can still trump that, after all] But you're right, focusing on one weapon type first means you can learn to expand later. Having a ranged backup is always useful, trying to find a knife after you've thrown it can be an exercise in frustration, and you don't always have time to do so.
[ mind you, throwing knives ARE different beasts to regular daggers: tossing your primary weapon is never a good plan, hence separate backup weapons.
It's a good collection of weapons in here, and Vex nods in satisfaction as she takes in the selection. She has little doubt that the smith in charge knows how to use all of them; you don't need expert knowledge, but a little goes a long way towards making a good one. ]
Not every smithy has a big collection like this. I suspect that having that guild hall in town helps give you a reason to put so many on display. Not the only game in town, but I'd wager they've the weapon you'll be wanting here.
