Not really knowing where we were going was the problem. Humans ended up having to leave Earth pretty quick, and all their ships came reverse-engineered from one that crashed back in the 2000s, so it's not exactly modern technology on most of them. That and transporting an actual flying city and its territories - and all those people - on various ships is tricky business.
