[ daylight nods, looking a little relieved to hear firo's last words because. well.
this is going to be a difficult one to explain, let alone talk about. but daylight feels like he needs to talk about. he wants to talk about, since he feels like it'll be a long time before he's willing to open up about this again. ]
So... After I came back and resettled with the others, I met someone while out on a mission. She was getting harassed by some creeps and I chased them away. She thanked me and introduced herself as Erinyes. Said she was a scholar who specialised in cultural studies...
[ he then goes on to explain the complicated and convoluted story to the best of his abilities. he often stopped and stuttered, paused and puttered into silence while he tried to gather his wits or his thoughts or his words. it takes a while but the story soon emerges:
erinyes euryale quickly inserted herself into daylight's life after their first encounter. she became a source of knowledge and information for when he and his friends needed an extra hand in their adventures, with erin always eager to help daylight figure out his problems. he ended up seeing erin as a sort of sister figure, looking up to her because of her calm and collected personality and her kind nature. the two ended up bonding when he learned that she had lost her entire family during the legacy war and had been trying to find herself since, having just escaped slavery and other painful events to reinvent herself.
daylight wanted to do what he could to make her feel more welcome, feel like she belonged somewhere with someone. that included him helping her being allowed onto the lornful light, despite his friends' protests. they had become suspicious of erin overtime, and they were the ones who found glaring inconsistencies in her story and claims, but daylight had always come to her defence.
he argued that they should give her a trust, give her more chances to prove herself to them. daylight knew she was a good person despite her moments of dishonesty and he knew she wouldn't do anything to hurt anyone. not after what she had been through.
he was wrong, however.
it turned out that erin is - was? he's not sure what happened to her anymore - part of a group that consists radical extremists determined to wipe out galateions from the galaxy. all in the name of their attempt to secure peace for the universe. in their eyes, there could be no peace if the galateions continued to exist. especially the ones heavily involved in the legacy war that took everything from erin.
erin had been tasked to go after a specific target and she knew that fastest way to get access to the lornful light's command crew - and, thus, her real target: the leader leader of the dreadroids, nemesism, thought to be long dead after his trials. in reality nemesism had been stripped of his identity and memory with the support and approval of daylight's parents, now under custody of a certain group so they can keep track of his whereabouts and conditions. - was to become friends with daylight and integrate herself in his life.
she knew daylight would give her access to the ship, allowing her to hunt down nemesism - now nothing more but an absentminded janitor, his processors riddled with gaps in his memories due to the intense mindwipe and system rewrites - and attempt to finish him off. she almost got away with it too when she cornered the amnesiac galateion.
but daylight had intervened when he just happen to stumble across the attempt. without thinking, he put himself between nemesism and erin's cannon gun, his frame ripped to shreds as a result of the intense blast. the shot had been adjusted so it could destroy a thirty foot tall who had heavy armour plating. daylight's little frame and thinner armour meant he spent the next several weeks in the medical bay, barely holding onto life as the medical team tried to stabilise him.
it was there in the medical bay, as he faded in and out from stasis lock, that he learned what happened and everything else connected to it: erin's capture and her true origins. the truth behind 014-n/nemesism. his parents' awful involvement with what happened to the poor galateion.
and erin's lack of remorse when confronted with the news that he was barely hanging on. "and i would have taken the shot again if given the chance. this means nothing to me." ]
... Then I woke up here. Human and all. It, um, definitely beats being stuck in a medberth all day... [ the joke falls flat and daylight allows it to. he's too busy rubbing his chest now. no doubt feeling the phantom pain of the shot tearing through him and, essentially, shredding him to pieces.
meddy, sensing his distress, hoots sadly. they nuzzle his face, pecking at his hair in an effort to comfort the clearly upset young man. ]
