Inside the stone buildings of the rest of the Temple, there are other preparations going on where it is mostly dry. Some groups seem to be getting together and working on various arts-and-crafts projects. There are paper lanterns with elaborately painted designs that seem designed to float on water, fly through the air, or hang in strands between buildings as decorations, some shaped like flowers, some in more outlandish shapes. There are things that look like supplies for typical fair games - targets for shooting or ring tosses, hoops to throw things through, pachinko game boards - being constructed and carried outside to be placed under the tents. Out in the courtyard garden near the kitchen, there are some suspiciously bamboo-like plants in pots growing with surprising speed.

The kitchens themselves are no less active, though mainly in the early mornings and evenings when fewer other people are trying to make use of the facilities there. All kinds of interesting smells emerge (some more appetizing than others), and slowly but surely, giant platters with snacks and containers with drinks are piled up out of the way and stored for later. You can sneak some, if you’d like, but taste and quality are not guaranteed.
