Maes smiles, fondly thinking of the two boys when he'd first met them. He doesn't think Al needs to apologize for that at all. It makes sense and Maes is just appreciative of this time they get to share.

My job is basically police work and that's more going over files and reading reports than most people think. People don't like to talk about the non-flashy parts of jobs, but I prefer solving puzzles to fighting." He didn't understand alchemy in the least, but he knew what kind of intelligence and commitment it took to become one. Even your average alchemist was typically an intelligent and capable person, but when you got to the Elrics, well, they were on a whole other level.
