If we like them a lot, they get another four years assuming the guy or lady running against them doesn't beat them. That's the max they can stay in power. They work together with congress, more people we elect to help make laws, and the courts to keep the country running. It's a system of checks and balances also known as every group is holding the other accountable to keep things as fair as possible. It works for the most part assuming everyone does their job.
