need the sun to break
Who: mako, ota otherwise! please bring me your babies c:
Where: various places
When: throughout the sickness event, the last prompt can cover any time period in it as mako won't progress past the first stage.
Rating pg for now! will update if it changes. some mention of a lightning-based injury tho!
What: settling in and maybe trying to mother-hen other sick people who need it. please toss me a pm or hmu on discord (violynnist#8733!) if you would like something custom for you, or to try another situation/scenario also! This was my intro post on the CR meme as well if that's easier to poke at c:

( he's no stranger to the fey and fantastic. being friends with the avatar has meant years of encountering things that might have otherwise been beyond belief. he has a healthy threshold of tolerance for the scope and scale of strange than most people would probably expect of a no-nonsense cop.
his first thought is spirit wilds. even astoria herself sort of seems like one, though she looks human (he's heard stories of koh) and the misty phantasms that roam the temple grounds certainly don't disabuse that notion. mako is. quiet. taking it all in, listening, learning. he jots down notes, which is difficult to do when one arm is an out-of-commission ruin, strapped into a sling that pinions it to his body. he sort of rests the notepad in the hollow of his wrist, over the fabric of the sling and scribbles everything in police short-hand.
thrown into a new situation? doesn't know anyone or anything beyond astoria's welcoming spiel? time to wander the grounds of the temple. when he runs into other people, he'll approach them politely and introduce himself, )
I know it probably doesn't matter here, but I'm a Detective with the Republic City Police back home. My name's Mako. I'd like to ask you a few questions, if that's all right?
( he gestures with his notepad, obviously intending on writing things down. feel free to talk with him, refuse a statement, agree but only off the record, etc. he's a mostly-amicable (if. sometimes humorless) guy! )
๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐;
( he can't feel the sun. it's there, visible, a low-hanging presence on the cusp of dawn. it's a slightly different color than the one he's used to, and he can feel its rays on his skin, but there's. nothing. no energy, no... deep, abiding warmth that sinks down into the bones and drags the life and breath of fire to life through the conduit of his physical body.
it lends further credence to the thought he must be in the spirit world, or something very like it. he finds his way to the fighting ring and, still with his left arm in its sling, he tries a few right-handed jabs at one of the training dummies. nothing. nothing. he's stayed calm through everything else, being recruited — kidnapped, essentially — to someone else's fight, the whole thing. but this? it reminds him too much of amon.
out of frustration, he kicks at the air, the sort of slicing motion that would have swept fire away from him in an arc. and.
to his complete and utter surprise, a column of rock juts up out of the earth and launches the dummy several yards away. mako, instinctively, turns to look for bolin or korra or even beifong, the earthbenders whose company he spends the most time in, but. he's alone.
except, perhaps, for your character. mako looks a little sheepish at having been caught unawares — he's usually a little harder to sneak up on, so he's rubbing the back of his neck as he asks, )
Did you do that?
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐'๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐;
( he hates getting sick. firebenders are pretty hardy, all things considered. they tend to run hot. mako isn't used to feeling ill, it's only happened a couple times in memory, and. his default state is ignore all physical discomfort. he doesn't seem to be badly off, either, given what everyone else is going through.
so. a case of the sniffles. he sucks it up. pitches in around the kitchens, makes himself available to anyone who seems to be suffering. he even tries to go out into the forest of the fey to see if there is anything out there, some plant or herb that can be used as a remedy.
if your character needs some looking after during the event, mako's your guy. he will dutifully help total strangers, tuck people in, carry them off to a bed and help them through the loss of their senses should it come to that! let him big-brother you. it's the squishiest you'll ever see him. )
no subject
( which may be never. hard to say. mako's jaw juts out to one side in a stubborn twist of pride, and then he sinks down onto his knees. he wants to touch the earth under his bare palm, see if the roar of it is any different than it feels through his shoes. he can see why the old chief preferred to go barefoot, at least. he tugs korra down with him, squeezing his hand around the clutch of hers before he lets her go.
he knows that, of all of them, korra is feeling this shift the hardest. she puts too much on herself at the best of times, and he's been... worried. in the past that she's perfectly willing to let her entire identity be subsumed by the avatar. it's as if she thinks you can't have one without the other. but he didn't love the avatar. he loved korra. and although the quality of that love has transmuted, softened at its rough edges, become something lived-in and real and whole, it's stronger than ever and it's just for her. not who society holds her up as.
he can freak out about earthbending later. right now, someone he loves more than life itself needs a friend. )
Everyone I've talked to says that if they had... abilities in their world, they lost them when they came here. But they all seem to have gained something else. It's got to be the same for you, otherwise it just wouldn't make sense. This isn't a case of someone kidnapping the Avatar. This is someone wanting who you are in spite of the Avatar.
no subject
she hates meditating, but not half as much as she used to. )
Well, if it's in there somewhere, I can't find it.
( it's a little snippish, irritated, but entirely at herself. she looks apologetic just after though, shoulders slumping downwards. )
It's not just that. It's just โ not there. Water, earth, fire, air, I've cycled through them all and there's nothing. If Tenzin were here, he could explain it better. Like ... cosmic energy, being connected to the two worlds, feeling that tension in all the elements. ( she sighs, heavily, hands nervously jumbling through all the different meditative poses she knows, each for a different chakra. ) But I'm not tethered to this world, so there's nothing. No connection.
And I can't feel Raava, either. She doesn't come when I call out to her, so. ( she settles for her fists pounded together, punching each other sharply once. this is how she'd get into the spirit world if - if there was a spirit world. ) So there really is nothing. I'm just normal.
( she's been just normal before. she can deal with it, has learned how to deal with, has overcome her obstacles and trained spiritually in the ways of nonbenders. it's just. lonely, at the end of the day. there's a part of her that's barren now, in the place where raava used to take up. )
no subject
honestly, if he could give up bending at all just for the chance for her to feel the earth, he would. it's not her favorite element, he knows she favors fire, but. at least it's a connection. being in tune with the elements all your life and having that connection suddenly terminated... it's like losing an integral sense. )
Korra... you're a lot of things, but even without your bending, you could never be normal. You're still smart, and funny, and beautiful, an incredible fighter and an amazing friend. And we know this isn't permanent. No one's ever been able to keep us where we don't want to be indefinitely, right? Team Avatar's just a little off our game right now. But we aren't going to stay that way. This place must have given you something. We just need to find it.
no subject
she takes a deep, stabilizing breath, and nods once. assured. her eyes open up sharply and her hands switch position - crown chakra. )
Thanks, Mako. You're right.
( at another point in time, she thought mako was only ever capable of saying the wrong thing, but she's learned, after awhile. all he ever does is try to do right by the people around him. )
I'll look harder. ( something has to be there somewhere, he's right. with her worries probably put at bay, she turns the attention back to mako - she responded excitedly, happily, because she has a love for all the elements, but. shelving one for another? she can't imagine what that might feel like. ) Seriously, though. Are you gonna be okay?
no subject
he's never really talked to her about his past. asami knows, but after he told her it just... didn't become important to tell anyone else. it was like he needed to get it out, and then once he did that was it.
mako fans his hands out across the dirt of the arena, makes a fist. focuses his energy. a chunk of rock rises out of the ground. it doesn't feel natural to him the way fire does, but it's not... difficult the way he thinks it would be with water or air. earth is the element he's most familiar with, after his own. )
You know, when I was a kid I would've actually preferred earthbending.
( he says it casually enough, not really wanting to get into the details of why. he's done his grieving, he's dwelt on the loss, he's surrendered hours to the rage and hate and shame. healing came slow, and what was broken in him knitted together crooked and wrong, but. he survived it. just like he's survived everything else. )
Fire kinda had to... grow on me.
( she's worried he won't feel. like a complete person without his bending any more than she'll feel like one without hers. this is how he reassures her. he's not terribly good at it, but he does give her a little smile. )
I can get used to it. Waterbending might've been pretty impossible, though. Me, a watetrbender. Can you imagine that? I'd be terrible at it!
( a loud, theatrical groan. )
no subject
she snorts out a laugh, though, thinking mako might just be exaggerating. )
I can't even imagine that. You were practically a Master when I first met you.
( being able to bend lightning spoke that much about his talents. he was effortless, and honestly unrivaled as far as firebenders in probending were concerned.
but, right. maybe she shouldn't focus on what he was, so much as what he is, now, as an earthbender. she knows his father is from ba sing se, figures that's why he'd hold earthbending at such an esteem. and you know? korra thinks he'll be good at it. he's at least got earth kingdom in his veins, a genetic code written in a language the earth can understand. )
You know you'd be good at anything you put your mind to. Besides, water isn't so bad. ( water tribe bias who?? korra lets her eyes fall shut, and she attempts to balance meditating and conversation at the same time. ) Air's what you've got to look out for. Seriously. You remember when I was learning it? It was the worst.
no subject
( excuse you, who's the firebending prodigy here?
(both of them. it's both of them.)
but by his tone, he's not being serious, nor is he remotely offended. he's just teasing her. it eases something, a weight on both of them. he's glad they were able to patch things up, finally come to some sort of. balance. equilibrium. they needed it so desperately, and even though things got hard and awkward, they've both come out stronger on the other side. he just wishes he'd never had to hurt her to get here. maybe if he'd been a better person back then, things would have been different now.
maybe korra wouldn't have felt like she needed to shut herself away for so long. a million maybes. mako closes his eyes briefly. )
I do remember. You were so frustrated with it. But it came to you when you needed it.
( and with it, she. saved his life. his smile softens. )
Though... I guess it was more when I needed it, huh?
( amon seems like lifetimes ago. he was such a kid, then. they both were. )
no subject
( when you needed it, korra smiles, something soft and pleased. one foot in a meditative trance, one in the real world, here with mako. it's a pleasant, but vulnerable place to be - the expression on her face is airy but genuine, not a lie to be found in the creases of her smile lines. )
You needed help and I need you, so. It worked out.
( it is a little ... borderline girlfriend-y. she doesn't mean it in that way, of course, and really has nothing but platonic feelings towards mako now, but you know. there are some things you aren't supposed to say to someone you used to whisper i love you to in between kisses. she doesn't think mako will take it the wrong way, though, if only because their destinies are woven with each other into the sands of time. of course she needs him. of course she's always needed him. she wonders if mako has a tally mark on how many times he's saved her life without question.
anyway, even if she wasn't the avatar, she would've learned airbending to save him. at least, she likes to think she would've.
her hand positions change again, and now there's - a crinkle in her brow, a frown set on her mouth. she wriggles a little bit, shifting in her seat, shoulders rising up straighter. )
I think I โ feel something. Maybe. It's difficult to ... know. ( she twists more, settles. ) It's not something I've felt before.

bolin... he stayed grounded for bolin, he tried to give him a foundation, structure to his life. mako got up at the same time every morning, and when there was food he'd prepare it for breakfast. he was regimental in his lesson plans. he made sure bo could read, made sure he learned earthbending, made sure he got good at it. if mako could have planned his days down to the minute he probably would have, because he barely had an idea of how to be a boy, much less a parent, and that discipline was what parenting looked like to him.
he's learned to relax a little. as they got older. grew up, grew apart. when bo joined kuvira it was just about the loneliest time in mako's life, though bo visited him when he could. but once he left again, mako used to stay up at night staring at the ceiling missing bo's snoring in the crappy old apartment they used to share. hoping that he was safe wherever he was. that he was eating enough and getting enough sleep. ultimately, he thinks it was good for them. he never realized how much he was holding bolin back until he saw him again after he'd been away once for some months and realized how much he'd grown.
but korra. korra came into his life like a whirlwind. she gave him something no one else ever has or will, change. not just. a new job. a new firebending trick. she made him realize he could be anyone he wanted. do anything he could. if he hadn't met her, he would have never become a cop. realized that calling and chased after it, because he wouldn't have thought it was possible. she widened the focus of his life, opened the horizon up to the sky and the stars beyond, and he is wildly, endlessly grateful for knowing her.
what they have is love. but it's not being in love, which. he probably always knew, somewhere in the bottom of his heart. so when she says that, he just. accepts it how it's meant, and touches her wrist in soft understanding.
when she says she feels something, he pulls back. )
Focus on it. ( he wishes tenzin were here. wwmtd. ) Reach inside yourself. You're the Avatar. Whatever this is, you're going to master it.
no subject
you can't just pull a new element out of thin air.
and, if she really thinks about it, really digs, the sun is - a lover, still, a friendly face. it's less the sun and more the beams, though, the warm dappling of sunlight soaking into her skin like a recharged battery. there's something there. akin to fire, but fluid like water, but structured like earth, but - well, actually not at all like air, but that's fine by korra. there's a little taste of everything there, it's just hard to put a name to it.
physically, she gets fidgeting. she hates meditating, and writhing around helps her feel closer to wrapping her fingers around that stark something sitting in the back of her mind. her eyes are still closed, so when a small ball of light curves around the palm of her hand and forms a perfect sphere like fog caught in a bubble, controlled enough that the light doesn't escape from the windows between her fingers, she doesn't even notice. she's still reaching. c'mon. almost got it. )
no subject
he knows she'll figure this out. it's a matter of time.
and when she does, and that little... light sphere appears in the shaded curve of her hand, he's grinning so hard he can feel his jaw ache with it. pride and joy in her accomplishment, because whatever that is. it has to be it. and it's unlike anything he's ever seen. there's no heat emanating from it, nothing fiery in that way. it's just. a ball bound up in all the dappled filaments of light.
he doesn't want to break her concentration, so he gives her time to sort it out further, and when he can't stand the wait anymore — )
Korra. Psst. Look down.
no subject
look down, he said. so she does.
itโs confusion, first. bending is like breathing for her, instinctive and natural, but this is like - she isnโt doing anything at all. her hands part on the ocean front of the spherical light, cradling the orb tenderly like itโs a delicate, breakable thing. itโs too soft for fire, but too hot for water. too - encapsulated for air, but too floaty and freeing for earth. something new. something different. )
Whaโat is that?!
( kind of - bewildered. what is that. her hands part and a beamed column of light shines up to the sky, bright but not blinding. both their eyes are yellow with illuminated light and - korra, knowing fully well how dangerous the elements are in the hands of people who donโt know how to use them, claps her hands shut to stop the light where it is. )
What was that!
no subject
I don't know!
( but he's excited for her anyway. what was that, do it again. )
It just... looked like light.
( which. actually... sounds pretty reasonable, now that he's thinking about it. it makes sense, if he follows the rules this place seems to have displayed so far, and it. suits her. light is hope, and that's what the avatar does.)
Light...bending?
no subject
maybe it was a fluke? she's not entirely sure how that makes sense in her brain, but it's the path of thought she chooses to go down, because. because. lightbending is not a thing. it can't be a thing, that's like - raava's thing, and she's a spirit.
fluke. right. in one hop, she's up on her feet, fighting stance at the ready. she moves her hands for all of a second, before she turns to look at mako, nodding her head. )
Brace yourself, just in case.
( she has good inclination towards maintaining the elements - she's a master of all four, and with that comes an inherent knowledge of how to move, how to be flexible with nature. so. she's got a pretty good idea on how to man this, moving her hands like a waterbender, stance strong like an earthbender. heave ho. her hands give a swift, elegant strike to the side, the way a water whip works, but it's just - light, like a flashing blade, rustling the dummies.
okay. not a fluke, then. korra looks down at her palm like she's seeing it for the first time. )
Lightbending ... ( her fists clenches and then she just - laughs, head tossed back. ) Cool! Did you see that Mako? Lightbending!
no subject
at least he doesn't kiss her. )
What did I tell you! That's the coolest thing I've ever seen!
( korra's greatest cheerleader reporting for duty, hello. )
no subject
( she lets herself be lifted, knowing mako can support her, one handed, at least long enough for her to toss both fists up in the air, and praise the spirit raava herself. thank all the spirits, really. at least she has something - it really didn't matter what it was. she has a thing now, and feels immediately less useless than she did five minutes ago.
her hands settle on his shoulders as he sets her down. korra debates punching his arm again for lack of proper affection, but. she's gotten better. she hugs mako tight once more, up on her tiptoes. )
Thanks for not giving up on me.
( she doesn't think there's ever been a time when he has, but. still. she's always somewhat winded by mako's devotion, or any of team avatar's devotion. she hardly thinks she's worth so many good, compassionate friends. it's a wonder how someone as selfish as korra has been able to maintain them, but. for a time, really, she didn't.
it's a good thing that's over. ( although asami's not here. maybe she should write her letters for - when, if she ever arrives. ) she squeezes mako's biceps as she leans back, dancing eyes bright. )
It's not half as cool as your earthbending! I'm serious. You're, like, a legend.
no subject
at the commentary about his earthbending, all he can do is laugh. )
Seriously? I moved one rock. ( and like, a handful of pebbles. ) I don't think that qualifies as legendary.
no subject
( minding the wounded arm, korra tugs his shirt sleeve until he's more in the middle of the platform, giving a big gesture outwards. do it again! it's show off time. )
You're gonna see, it'll help your firebending, too. Please get a little excited, Mako? It's cool!
no subject
but ever since he hung up his pro-bending gear, he's been. a lot more reserved in his personal life. a lot less willing to show off, even if there's a shy part of him that still likes the praise. more-so from korra, who he knows isn't saying it with any sort of ulterior motive.
he'd never admit that it sort of. bolsters up that inner kid who never really had the validation, who grew up pretending he wasn't interested or didn't need it. but everybody likes to hear they're good at something once in a while.
so although he's not going to cut loose enough to get excited, he does sigh in an exaggeratedly put-upon way and takes himself through a half-dozen earthbending forms. the earth obeys unquestioning. it's not quite as natural to him as firebending, but it's a warm stranger in its place, he can feel the solidity of the earth, striations and structure, the way it anchors him. he misses the lick of flames, conjured into being by instinct and breath, but. he meant it when he said he'd get used to it. mako, as a person, rebels against the idea of helplessness or ineffectiveness on an intrinsic level. there is no possible way he could gain another element and leave it unmastered. rocks lift and scatter, form and precision marrying into a decent show of competence. he's no avatar, but he's still someone who has paid more attention than most to the bending arts. )
There. Happy?
no subject
then again, mako has never been ordinary, so maybe it's not surprising.
her expression is entirely eased, lips pulled up in a small, soft smile, giving a look that says i told you so, although mako never really voiced any doubt. likely, he didn't have any. no one is more aware of his talents than him, but - he questions himself often enough, sometimes, for all the times korra doesn't. her arms are crossed, approval marking her stance.
she shakes her head. not happy, no. )
Proud.
( and then her grin cracks, teeth shown. )
You look just like a badger mole.
no subject
she's proud of him. it means the world, somehow.
even offset as it is by that badger mole comment. mako rolls his eyes. )
As long as Wu doesn't try to serenade me, I think I can live with that.
no subject
( just. the mention of the once prince makes korra do a full body shudder, sticking her tongue out in evident disgust. )
Thanks to whatever spirit that didn't kidnap him too. Knowing our luck, he'd show up and be the Avatar.
( more cringed, displeased faces, before korra just bursts in a fit of laughter, trying to imagine their royal boy as any kind of bender. he's also just an easy target to make fun of, although korra is softer on him now since he announced his plans to abolish the monarchy - most of her teasing comes from a place of casual endearment, and the rest of it is indisputable annoyance. )
How'd you put up with him for so long, again?
no subject
Let's do my psyche a favor and not joke about that.
( please. never again. he may have endeared himself to korra, but mako... well. he's not going to admit to having slightly more affection than 'annoyed tolerance' for him, but. either way, it's a narrow margin. )
It was just the job. Trust me, I wasn't hanging around with him for my sanity or well-being. Do you know he once got stuck in a shirt? And he wouldn't let me cut him out of it because it was 'rare elephant island silk', which I still think was just a sales pitch? Darkest day of my life.
( and, you know, it's mako, so... that's a pretty significant thing. )
