Who: mako, ota otherwise! please bring me your babies c:
Where: various places
When: throughout the sickness event, the last prompt can cover any time period in it as mako won't progress past the first stage.
Rating pg for now! will update if it changes. some mention of a lightning-based injury tho!
What: settling in and maybe trying to mother-hen other sick people who need it. please toss me a pm or hmu on discord (violynnist#8733!) if you would like something custom for you, or to try another situation/scenario also! This was my intro post on the CR meme as well if that's easier to poke at c:

( he's no stranger to the fey and fantastic. being friends with the avatar has meant years of encountering things that might have otherwise been beyond belief. he has a healthy threshold of tolerance for the scope and scale of strange than most people would probably expect of a no-nonsense cop.
his first thought is spirit wilds. even astoria herself sort of seems like one, though she looks human (he's heard stories of koh) and the misty phantasms that roam the temple grounds certainly don't disabuse that notion. mako is. quiet. taking it all in, listening, learning. he jots down notes, which is difficult to do when one arm is an out-of-commission ruin, strapped into a sling that pinions it to his body. he sort of rests the notepad in the hollow of his wrist, over the fabric of the sling and scribbles everything in police short-hand.
thrown into a new situation? doesn't know anyone or anything beyond astoria's welcoming spiel? time to wander the grounds of the temple. when he runs into other people, he'll approach them politely and introduce himself, )
I know it probably doesn't matter here, but I'm a Detective with the Republic City Police back home. My name's Mako. I'd like to ask you a few questions, if that's all right?
( he gestures with his notepad, obviously intending on writing things down. feel free to talk with him, refuse a statement, agree but only off the record, etc. he's a mostly-amicable (if. sometimes humorless) guy! )
๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐;
( he can't feel the sun. it's there, visible, a low-hanging presence on the cusp of dawn. it's a slightly different color than the one he's used to, and he can feel its rays on his skin, but there's. nothing. no energy, no... deep, abiding warmth that sinks down into the bones and drags the life and breath of fire to life through the conduit of his physical body.
it lends further credence to the thought he must be in the spirit world, or something very like it. he finds his way to the fighting ring and, still with his left arm in its sling, he tries a few right-handed jabs at one of the training dummies. nothing. nothing. he's stayed calm through everything else, being recruited — kidnapped, essentially — to someone else's fight, the whole thing. but this? it reminds him too much of amon.
out of frustration, he kicks at the air, the sort of slicing motion that would have swept fire away from him in an arc. and.
to his complete and utter surprise, a column of rock juts up out of the earth and launches the dummy several yards away. mako, instinctively, turns to look for bolin or korra or even beifong, the earthbenders whose company he spends the most time in, but. he's alone.
except, perhaps, for your character. mako looks a little sheepish at having been caught unawares — he's usually a little harder to sneak up on, so he's rubbing the back of his neck as he asks, )
Did you do that?
๐๐๐๐๐๐๐'๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐;
( he hates getting sick. firebenders are pretty hardy, all things considered. they tend to run hot. mako isn't used to feeling ill, it's only happened a couple times in memory, and. his default state is ignore all physical discomfort. he doesn't seem to be badly off, either, given what everyone else is going through.
so. a case of the sniffles. he sucks it up. pitches in around the kitchens, makes himself available to anyone who seems to be suffering. he even tries to go out into the forest of the fey to see if there is anything out there, some plant or herb that can be used as a remedy.
if your character needs some looking after during the event, mako's your guy. he will dutifully help total strangers, tuck people in, carry them off to a bed and help them through the loss of their senses should it come to that! let him big-brother you. it's the squishiest you'll ever see him. )

( he gestures to his arm. he's not going to hide it, zuko's too smart to think it's anything other than lightning. unfortunately, before lord zuko changed the face of firebending as it's understood in his time, not... many people could even use it. that's going to be something that sets him apart. but it's too much a part of him to lie about it.
he honestly doesn't know what the demographics would have been on a mixed family back in that time, but... he pretty much is from a firebender colony. that's what republic city started as. he can fake that part well enough. )
And yeah. I'm with you. It doesn't make sense to remove what makes us effective fighters. What did you end up with?
( he never asked katara, though her switch to firebending and bolin's to air would make water the logical choice. mako's the only one that's made a lateral move so far. )

[ listen zuko might not always be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he does have some skills of observation when he's not rushing headfirst into......... any number of things. also: mako respects zuko and doesn't hate him, though that barely makes sense for a firebender at the point he's at. he's trying not to think too hard about it, there's already so much to process here. ]
[ also: making a face. ]
Waterbending.
[ astoria sure thinks she's funny!!!!! at least, that's who zuko is blaming for this. ] Which is useless if you don't carry water around with you.
[ except water exists around, but zukos gonna complain!! ]

mako's never needed validation, he inured himself against its effects a long time ago. but it's still... nice. to hear. he smiles a bit, crooked but soft. he wants to say thank you, but. that's a little too heavy for a first conversation. instead: )
I wouldn't say it's useless. I mean... fire and airbenders are kind of spoiled by the ease of the element. Waterbending requires a lot more strategy and foresight.
no subject
Yeah, yeah. [ he grumbles!!! zuko has grown past his fire nation pride, he can appreciate the other elements. but also: it's a pain. he complains. it's one of his talents. ] It's just.... it's nothing like firebending.
[ it's his natural opposite. ] But I'm working on it. [ he's trying to learn how to heal properly, it's... a process. especially since katara still hates him, so it's hard for him to go to her for advice. ]
At least you have earth everywhere. [ it's easier to bend!! ]
no subject
he supposes the world was... bigger, in zuko's time. everything else too rigid and inflexible. zuko had probably never even seen a waterbender before he met katara, and by that age he would have already mastered most of the high-level firebending forms available to him.
he doesn't really want to lecture the firelord, but. maybe it would... help? mako shakes his head, and then shifts his left foot on the earth, causing a couple of vaguely chair-shaped pillars to erupt out of the ground. he gestures zuko to one of them, and goes to get the basket of food and tea he'd brought with him for the day's activities. once he's back, he portions it out on a slab of rock he raises between them. the tea goes into earthenware mugs that he has pretty obviously made himself. they're sort of ugly, but functional enough. )
Maybe it's just where I grew up ( don't ask him where, zuko, don't do it. ) — but I feel I learned the most from waterbenders, after firebenders, while I was mastering it.
sorry for the delay!!
[ he casts a side glance at the chairs and the earthenware, respectfully, but sits when gestured to and awaits whatever mako's doing (which turns out to be tea, something that makes him feel a little nostalgic. he looks at the earthware mug. ]
You made that yourself, right? [ he clears his throat kind of awkwardly. the trademark awkwardness!! ] It's.. not bad.
[ nailed it. but of course, he has to ask: ]
Where did you grow up?
[ because he can't think of a single place where firebenders and waterbenders would mingle. ]
np!!
( have awkwardness, will travel. they're a pair, they two. mako sort of clears his throat and tries to focus on the simple act of drinking tea instead. )
Uh. My family lived in the colonies. We're near the Mo Ce Sea. We see waterbenders from the north sometimes, coming to trade.
no subject
[ that was supposed to be encouragement. ]
Mo Ce Sea... [ zuko hasn't actually been to the colonies during his stint as a fugitive. he wouldn't have thought about the trade with the waterbenders, but it does make a certain sense. ]
I wouldn't have expected waterbenders to be on friendly terms with firebenders. But uh... in a good way.
[ just because he's seen first hand how much the earth kingdom hates the fire nation. with good reason. well, with the colonies it's probably different. ]
no subject
Well, with my brother being an earthbender, it makes it a little easier, you know?
( there's still a stigma against firebending in the age of republic city. more than once mako's found it a better idea to keep his mouth shut about his bending and let bo do the talking. things are better than they used to be, but you can't erase generational hurt. )
no subject
Yeah, good point. I don't know if I've ever seen a family with two different benders.
[ though, if anywhere.... the colonies would be the place it would happen. ]
no subject
Yeah, we, uh. We get that a lot. Neither of our parents were benders either, so... it kinda just came out of nowhere.
no subject
That's...... unusual.
[ an awkward pause, as per the firebender tradition. ] Uh... not in a bad way, I mean.
