( the sickness: phase two )
![]() ![]() the sickness ends. the temple. The Temple, shortly after Astoria's burst of energy, is in a constant state of growth. Trees are bursting into existence from seeds in mere seconds, flowers are growing wherever magic lands . . . and the Temple is abruptly a-buzz with energy, magic crackling throughout the air. You may find a tree in your house, or flowers suddenly growing along the walls, or plants wiggling their way through the stone walls of the buildings of the Temple. All of a sudden, the place looks very overgrown. ![]() lake dona. Lake Dona is a massive body of water, stretching outward for so far that it almost seems like an ocean until you see that the water is fresh. It is surrounded by long, leafy trees that dip into the water and has a variety of ancient ruins scattered around it -- weathered stones set into circles at seemingly even intervals, old buildings that seem to mirror the Temple in construct. |

He watches him move the stones, lost in thought. It seems like the lake is older than this though what with the mermaids and the lake monster. He had tried to speak to the mermaids and although his politeness had earned their trust somewhat they had refused to share any information about the ruins. They'd been very dismissive. This had left him with a sense of uneasiness.]
The mermaids were not willing to share any information about it despite my best efforts. 'Tis made me a bit wary, then, to think about what this may have been for. [Maybe it did something bad to the lake? Who can say...]
An interesting theory but the sickness was undoubtedly from the previous world we visited. I don't believe this is related to that but rather a consequence from Astoria having to dispel it. Perhaps we would never have found this if not for that. [But... he would have rather not had the sickness. Nights spent fretting over the life of his dear friend had not exactly been pleasant.
He steps closer and notes some rocks are larger than others.]
The larger ones mostly likely were intended to rest on the cardinal directions. The smaller would sit at the intercardinals.

So much goes into it that I never considered...
[ He leaves the stones where they are, and draws his own circle in the ground with the tip of his shoe. Within it, a square, unlike the usual triangle or pentagram, circles at each corner as he tries to imagine a compass rose. It sort of looks like he's doodling, piecing together circles and squares, but it's just... something he only vaguely remembers, so maybe that's why it doesn't turn out looking quite right. ]

There are schools dedicated to the study of it where I am from as magic is a part of every day life. Although not all can be gifted in it, of course. [Just like anything else one would learn in school, he supposes.]
What is it you are drawing?

It's a circle to channel dark magic. [ uh- ] There's light, too, but I can't remember how that goes. I think I need ofuda or something.

Anyway thaumaturges study "dark magic" so it isn't always a negative thing.]
Black magic then, where I am from, which is the basis of some truly potent spells. Be cautious. ["Light magic" would be... white magic, probably?
Not even close considering how the Persona spells work but he's trying!]

I learned that, eventually. But I don't use them all that often. It's exhausting, and more often than not, they get used against you.
[ They're annoying. Either way, it's not as if he can use magic by himself, even with this rudimentary circle in front of him, so he scuffs the markings out with his shoe and leaves it at that. ]

His world sounds dangerous to have such spells wielded against him like that.]
Unfortunate... but I suppose my experience is much the same. [When it comes to having magic used against you in battle...]
Where did you learn magic in your world?

[ How does he say that he got his "magic" shoved into his soul in the form of Death when he was a tiny child? Dangerous is not having a school or a proper mentor either, but rather a group of friends around his age who have barely a handful of years more "experience" that was cobbled together from nothing. ]
I guess it's mostly instinct, and I don't know much about it. Yours sounds more... textbook, though.
[ That he can actually identify features of magic circles and the such. ]
