Who: Atem | OTA
Where: His room, the Temple of Beginnings, and the Fighting Ring
When: Mid-late September
Rating PG-13
What: It's better to do something than nothing at all.
I. ▼ cups are better than socks
[Weeks since Atem's arrival, he feels... better. Breathing is easier, the soreness of his throat is almost gone, and the coughing fits aren't as frequent. He's not 100% yet, but a few more days of rest should rid whatever is left. It's not ideal since he'd like to learn more about the temple, but neither is collapsing from overexertion. Sometimes he needs to allow himself the rest.
But... there aren't that many things to do in his room. In a fit of boredom, he "borrowed" a few cups from the kitchen to use in a balancing game while he waits for Yugi. It's almost a race, will Yugi return before Atem finishes?
There are two cups left.]
II. ▼ it's magic. there's no other explanation
[The best explanation for the magic is... loud. The magic is loud in Atem's ears. The temple buzzes while the forest hums, but it's not just that. There's the Millennium Puzzle, Yugi... and he assumes Astoria, but he isn't certain. Every bit of instinct begs for him to shut it out, and he manages for a few hours. At least, he thinks he does until it's back. There doesn't seem much he can do about it.
...Which, quite frankly, is unacceptable. Because where there is a will, there is a way, or something like that. Atem's driven from his room and the more familiar hallways to pinpoint every bit of magic he can sense. Maybe if he knows each unique source he can isolate it..? Whatever, it's worth a shot.
He tries to remain discreet while he explores the temple, but his hair and linen tunic don't lend themselves well to stealth.]
III. ▼ practice makes perfect
[Atem lets loose his arrow, and misses his mark for the tenth time in a row. Under his breath, he curses his bad aim, pulling the bow around his shoulder to move toward the practice target and gather arrows with freed hands. The muscle memory is there, but his eye-hand coordination is sorely lacking. Unbelievable... Once he could hit fleeing gazelle from a moving chariot! Now he's lucky if he doesn't take someone's eye out by accident. Siamun doesn't have to be there for Atem to hear his chiding loud and clear: "impatience undoes experience."] No, two weeks ill and 3,000 years dead undoes experience.
[He sighs through his nose while shoving arrows back into the quiver. Practicing until his fingertips bleed isn't how he wants to spend every morning, but if they're to save worlds then he cannot go unarmed and unpracticed. Not everyone will be kind or diplomatic... That's naive. Osiris isn't reliable either, not with its size or capricious attitude. Not that it's around at the moment, its existence to the realm seems just as capricious.
Time to start again.]

Spying's kind of bad manners, you know.
[says the man who watches the world from a distance. still, he's observing carefully - ready to draw a sword if needed, though it hides in his staff.]

Atem stops nursing his behind when Merlin addresses him. No need to make a further fool of himself, especially when it seems like there's not much to turn this around in his favor just yet. Lousy first impressions cost quite a bit of social credibility. But, if that's the case, it's better to go all in, and hope his charisma pulls him through. At least to prevent any potential confrontation.]
Yeah... Did this to myself, huh? [He winks.
Despite the bruising, Atem stands without any difficulty. Confidence is as important as humor and charm considering his current situation.]
Sorry. I was curious about what you were doing, but I didn't want to interrupt. You looked busy.

Well, you've already been looking, and I'm pretty sure that hurts more than any scolding, so come on in and you can watch up close.
[and with that, he sweeps back into his room. the floor's still half cracked and shattered - areas for the branches slightly cramped, but there's been improvements made. half of the floor's been fixed, expanded in a different way, what was once plain stone fused back together with a subtle design. cracks become curves, something a little more natural to complement the tree itself. some areas of broken stone have the pieces in a small pile, so that he can place them back as he needs.]
I woke up to this growing here. Can you believe it? It was a real mess.

Not the weirdest thing I've seen this morning... You're making room for it? [this is different than any repair spell he's seen...]

That's the idea. Removing the tree would still leave me needing to fix the floor in the end, and it's not a bad addition. Just new. All it needs is enough space around the bottom to be able to flourish and upward room to grow, plus some sun. That can all be arranged easily.

[he accepts the piece with a smile of thanks.]
Maybe a second window?

You like sleeping in?

[it's not the same thing. but in dreams, one could be anywhere, everywhere. to walk through them was a great pleasure. turning over the piece in his hands, he exchanges it for another, trying to decipher where it really should go. magic could smooth it over without a thought - but that wasn't the point.]
