( look, he and zuko are awkward kindred firebender souls, who needs pleasantries when there is food to be had?? no one, that's who. but mako does spare a smile for katara. he points to a few earthenware pots that he has definitely fired himself as a form of earthbending practice. the lid is off one of them, and something vaguely aromatic emanates from it. )

Korra had some ideas about Southern Water Tribe cuisine, so hopefully it turned out all right. And, uh, Zuko, there's — a dry pot in the back.

( it's spicy. because firebenders. mako really doesn't expect anyone else to eat it, though bolin might at least sample it while korra makes faces at them. )

Korra and Bolin just ducked out to get drinks, they should be back any minute.

[ at least mako understands him!! zuko does look a little embarrassed when katara calls him out, making a face, but fellow awkward firebender waves it off so it's all good. ]

I didn't know you cooked. [ not that he would.... since they just met. but he's going to be polite and get up to serve mako and katara before he gets the food for himself. he has one single manner!! ]

[ she just... looks between the two of them. are all firebenders like this. is this just like, a thing? she doesn't usually hang out with a lot of them so her sample size is a bit small. ]

We might as well, if they won't take too long. [ she's going to poke at the food though, just to see what it's like. ] Is this something you guys do often together?

Uh... yeah. Cooking. My father was a grocer, so... I guess it was just something I was around a lot when I was a kid.

( he's not going to get into the sad, sorry part of that. how he has almost no memories of his parents anymore, and most of what he does have is locked into the memory center of his brain alongside the smell of food.

also, wow, getting served by the fire lord. his entire life has just been flip-turned upside down.

and no, katara, sorry. it's just that mako is almost as awkward as zuko is, for an entirely different reason. )

Korra and Bolin don't cook, so they'd probably just go hungry if we didn't. You guys are always welcome, though.

( bolin would live on the charity of others and korra would burn fish down by the lake's edge, and that would be the size of it. )

[ good ol' mako, making zuko look good. truly, he is a bro. he gives a little lopsided smile and at the mention of the korra and bolin not cooking and going hungry. he can picture it. ]

I, uh, well, I've picked up a thing or two, but I'm not that much of a cook.

[ he had to, living off the land as a fugitive for months. plus, firebending makes for easy grilling and roasting. so, he's decent at it. but team avatar is pretty self sufficient, so zuko hasn't had to pick up the slack in the cooking department. ] Next time I'll make tea.

[ and tell uncle's favorite tea joke, except it's just the punch line because he can't remember the rest of it. ]

considering her reaction when she first discovered that, there is a small hint of disbelief in her tone that zuko can probably catch. ]

he can tell there's still a bit of tension between them, though beyond the historic reasons he already knows it's hard to say if there's any one... specific thing. so he just sort of... focuses more on keeping his tone easy and even. )

Yeah, in Ba Sing Se. [ poor mako, having to field these baby teenagers and their time shenanigans. he glances over at katara (he never knows what she's thinking), but continues regardless. ]
