( he makes a soft, frustrated sort of exhalation. korra posed that question to him just the other day, following it up with when was the last time you had a vacation? as far as he's aware, he's never actually had one. even that time with korra at the south pole was still on avatar business. )

People keep asking me that. I don't know, all right? I guess I like cooking.

( but it's not. a passion. just something to do. )

...it's a start, I guess. [Mako, we really need to get you a hobby.] I suppose we could make you into a regular gourmet with enough time.

What about that sport? The one that you played with Korra?

( he just sort of throws his hands up into the air. sheryl pls, you are about to witness him lowkey have a tantrum of pure chagrin. this time he makes a very put-upon argh sort of noise. )

What difference does it make if I'm passionate about something other than my job? I love being a cop! It's important to me, and I get a chance to make a real difference in my hometown! I've put away hundreds of criminals!

( and every person he drags off the street is someone else who won't —

Besides, pro-bending brought out the absolute worst in me, I don't want to go back to that.

[Huh. She really wasn't expecting that reaction from him. Maybe she touched a nerve.

She waits until he's gotten it out of the system (or looks that way, anyway).] It's not wrong to care about your job.

But what are you going to do here? If that's the only thing you're interested in doing, then you'll die of boredom. Maybe literally, for all I know about this place.

[She's a little curious about what his "absolute worst" looks like, but won't push it.]

( selfish, self-absorbed... in it for the money and fame, you know how it is. mako fails to realize that's just 'typical teenager', though, and ascribes it to some moral failing that he, personally had. so of course, by that reasoning, it's the Worst Thing Ever. he was a terrible person, the end!! )

I can still do my job here. Maybe not the same as back home, but I can protect people, and investigate the worlds we go to, and maybe try to figure this all out.

Great, so you've got long-term goals. That's fine; I can respect that.

That's not a great formula for day-to-day living, though. There are only so many criminals to catch and so many threats to protect people from.

Unless you've got an idea for putting germs behind bars the next time we all get sick?

( they're nearly back to the temple, and mako can smell whatever's being cooked in the kitchens, that woodsmoke-fire scent that reminds him of nothing so much as home. electric energy was on the up and up, but nearly everyone still had an old stove for when the snow piled up outside. he tucks his hands back into his pockets, just for something else to do with his hands. the nub of a pencil is in the right one, he curls his fingers around it. )

( he says that lightly enough, not seeming to mind being teased. but he has to ruin the moment because he's a dumpster gremlin by following it up with a more serious, )

But we should have quarantine protocols in effect anyway. I feel like there hasn't really been time to establish a structure yet.

Oh, deculture. [She sighs at his response. Quite the single mind, Mako.

It's almost cute.] You don't really think that'll do much in a population as small as this one, do you? There's going to be some interaction, no matter what.

Hell, I'd almost say that if anything like that ever happens again, best to have everyone get sick all together, right away. That's how you build immunity, right? [Sheryl Nome: Singer and disease morbidity scholar.]

That's also how a lot of people die before you get immunity.

( no one died from struxta's plague, but if astoria hadn't done what she had... would they? bolin got pretty bad there, before the end. )

What's your alternative?

Say you confine everyone sick to their rooms. How do they eat? Even if you have people leaving their food at the doors, there'll be a little germ contamination, and people who are contagious before they even know they're sick.

I say, it's better to just get it over with.

I don't have one yet.

( it's not that she doesn't have good points, but. he knows there's a system that could work, he just has to... come up with it first. mako likes structure. )

At the least, we could build some sort of decontamination room.

Which could work, if simply walking through the hallways wasn't probably leaving germs behind for people to inhale.

You're coming at it from the right angle; I just think the space is too limited and there are too few people for any of that to work at all. It's not like this is a big city where you can avoid people.

[resistivity]

( which is probably half his problem. he's used to the bustle of republic city, which has a cool million inhabitants — not large for sheryl's time, but the biggest city on his planet in his. he doesn't really know how to cope with his 'community' being a few dozen people and a robot. or two. he hasn't met them all, but. robots.

they arrive at the temple doors, and mako sort of gestures her inside with his good hand. )

When I say decontamination room, I mean more like... tents set up at the entrance and exit points of whatever world we go to next. Not really bringing them back to the temple and letting them wander around anyway. You're right, it'd be like herding flying lemurs, but. I don't think it's fair for people to get sick because others are careless jerks about it.

I think you've probably got unrealistic expectations. That's all.

[She shrugs.] But what do I know? I'm a singer, not a city planner.

What are flying lemurs?

( who knew that he, of everyone else in his life, would be the dreamer? certainly not mako himself. he stops at the place where the temple splits, the rooms on one side and the kitchens on the other. )

Flying lemurs are... primates? I guess? That can, uh. Well. They can fly. They're an animal from my world.

( he's the best at this 'describing things' thing. it's not like he's spent much time around lemurs anyway, unless you count meelo's pet pokey. )

I guess that was really implied by the name, huh...
