Seemingly overnight, the Guild Hall owned and operated by the Silver Blade is decked to the nines Long streamers and banners are draped and a massive banner has been unfurled across the front of the building. It hails the events of the coming two weeks:

The Night of Wonders

Murmurs abound through the city; a thrill of excitement is in the air, and the locals are delighted to finally have cause to celebrate. The theme of The Night of Wonders is one of rebirth. The people of Mirabar are celebrating the continued survival of their home, the success of taming the Giant Rebellions across Faerun, and their resident adventurers! You are all thanked, profusely, for helping reinvigorate Mirabar with your hard work, and the people of Mirabar want to celebrate with you!

Booths have sprung up everywhere, full of food, music, laughter, and joy. Take a trip around the city over the next few weeks or so, and see what you find: there is no shortage of things to do in the riverside city of Mirabar.

Especially, it seems, because there are a plethora of new people. Not members of the Circle, but others? It seems that Astoria's grip on the Rift has slipped and other Travelers have found their way to Mirabar, just in time for the festival in question. You have no idea how they got here, but hey -- they're here, right? We may as well enjoy the party.

YOU'LL SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT.
Like any good festival, there are a ton of street games and vendors to choose from! Try your hand at an archery contest, where a bullseye nets you 1 GP, but playing at all gets you a weird-looking stuffed rabbit. There are also your classic "throw a ball at a bottle" games where they seem awfully rigged. Are those bottles glued down? What a rip-off!

There is also a jousting tournament, which really means sticking a broom between your legs and running at someone with a padded sword. Whoever gets hit first loses! It's mostly meant for children, but the local children will definitely encourage adult Travelers to give it a shot.

Finally, there's no shortage of food to buy -- turkey legs, meat pies, popcorn, sweet cakes, and cotton candy are abound throughout the festival. And of course, plenty of mead. Explore, have fun, and have a blast!

ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT;
PUNCH, PUNCH, PUNCH YOUR THROAT
One of the highlights of the festival is the infamous kayak race -- a hallmark of Mirabar culture and sport. The leather kayaks, handmade by the locals in Mirabar, are beloved and much bragged about, and after a month or so of testing, they are finally ready for the tournament.

Many sign up -- locals, members of the Circle, travelers that have wandered from distant lands . . . but only one team can conquer! So, congratulations to TEAM 1! You have won 100 GP each, a set of three trophies, and and all-you-can-drink voucher at the Dusty Coffer for the duration of the festival! Cheers!

Alternatively, you can also enter in the fighting tournament, set up by a local bunch of rowdy Guild members that just like to punch each other. The fighting tournament is a bit less prestigious than the kayak tournament, but you've still got a bunch of folk who turn up to see who is the best around. Are you a winner, or a loser? Either way, much praise to RUBY ROSE who winds up winning the whole lot! You win 300 GP, and a championship belt that looks like it is made out of gold, but it is definitely not.

Feel free to play out races, match-ups, scuffles, or observation! The winners may be set in stone, but you can feel free to thread out whatever rows or punches to your heart's content.

🡆 Prior to the tournament, you might hear what some of the betting rings have to say...who has their eyes on you? Or is it a friend of yours, by any chance? Looks like word goes around, it could go in any direction.

🡆 The crowd around you is roaring with passion and excitement. They may even get as heated as you do, so try not to let their zealous reactions get the better of you.

🡆 The most you'll get after the tournament is a towel to wipe off your blood, sweat, and potentially tears. If you've been injured, it could be in your best interest to seek medical hel and rest. Or not.

THE CEREMONY OF LIGHTS.
Every night of the festival, the people of Mirabar go down to the river's edge with paper lanterns. You can get them by the boatload, for free, provided to every single person who wishes to have one. On these lanterns are tags which you can write whatever you would like.

Should you ask the locals, they say that they write down their hopes, their dreams, and their wishes. Once they do that, they set out into the boats and push them out into the air, to send them to the gods, and pray for proper fortune. You may take out a boat (which are on the river a plenty) if you wish to do so, and participate in the ceremony to your heart's content. But there is something almost solemn, about the ceremony.

These people, clearly, are hoping for an end to conflict, and a continued prosperity to their city.

What do you wish for?

PAPER FACES ON PARADE.
Finally, at the end of the Festival, there is a massive masquerade in the Guild hall. Everyone is wearing a mask, ranging from basic black to brightly colored with a lot of feathers and jewels. It seems everyone has gotten into the spirit of the Festival, and the locals are intent on partying until the sun comes up.

There is a live band, a lot of dancing, laughter, and joy. There is a massive table of food of every type you can think of, a plethora of wine and ale, and endless merrymaking to be had. Feel free to dance, eat, drink, and celebrate for as long as you desire!

But be sure to go outside at around 11:00 PM, to watch the beautiful fireworks display over the river. You can run out to grab a boat, to watch it on the river proper, or you can watch it from outside the Guild hall. It's a lovely, romantic end to your hard work in Faerun . . . enjoy it, and each other.

🡆 In the heat of the dance, it's likely that you'll be passed from one partner to another. Try to make do with the foreign — or perhaps unexpectedly familiar face that will be greeting you. And try not to get caught in the middle of a slow dance...

🡆 Some of the food and drink offered will serve as a bit of a pick-me-up: the people of Faerun have decided to use their magic to ensure that the party is as enjoyable as can be. So for those who are a bit more on the antisocial, troubled or moodier side, perhaps an enchanted dinner will make the night easier on you?

🡆 Take the boat a tad too far out and you run the risk of getting stranded in the river. The current grows stronger the further down along you go, so do be careful.

MOD NOTES.

paper faces on parade

Weiss was also wondering how she had gotten here. she thought she was on her way to one of her father's tedious gatherings, but this didn't look like anything the elder Schnee would have come up with. She smoothed out her white dress. Black snow flake beads adorned the sleeveless, silver top while the white chiffon flared around her legs like snow dust. She wasn't out of her element and if she was at a party where her every move wouldn't be spied on all the better. She looked around for something to drink when a familiar shade of red caught her eyes.

"It can't be....." she whispered, her thoughts trailing as she tried to push through the crowd to get a closer look.

[Ruby had managed to waddle her way over to table to get some snacks. She was stuffing her face like a fiend when she realized there was a familiar face in the crowd.]

W-Weimmph!?

[Crumbs and bits of food fell out of her mouth as she stared dumbfounded that another one of her friends had managed to find their way here during this party.]

Whem di- -ou geh hermmmph?

[Okay. Now she's actually going to swallow her food.

She's a classy lady.]

Almost as though she had summoned it from magic, Weiss whipped out a handkerchief. She passed it to Ruby with a prim look of disappointed.

"I can't believe that no matter where I run into you you have no refinement!" she snapped. "It's like you were raised by Beowolves. Didn't anyone teach you how to be a respectable young woman?"

Not that Weiss was one to talk. Her mother had checked out for years. Luckily Winter had been around to pick up the slack.

"Winter needs to start a bootcamp," she declared, crossing her arms. "Id pay for you and Yang's tuition."
clickclickbloom: (But time will mend our hearts)

[personal profile] clickclickbloom 2019-05-11 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ruby gratefully accepts the handkerchief and starts to clean herself off. It was amazing just how many crumbs one girl could produce.

"I'm plenty refined, The only problem is I'm way more refined on the battlefield than in situations like this!" Ruby will shoot right back, she knows where she shines and it's not at parties.

"I mean my dad tried, but I had Yang and Uncle Qrow as influences. He could only do so much." She said with a playful shrug. She did shudder at the thought of a Winter run boot camp.
schneeflakes: (say what now?)

[personal profile] schneeflakes 2019-05-12 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Weiss inwardly winced at Ruby's mention of being raised by just her father. She hadn't realized the comment probably came off as insensitive. Ruby, as usual, didn't seem to notice at least. Weiss crossed her arms looking slightly self conscious.

"I'll overlook it then, " she said, by way of the best apology Ruby would get. "But if I ever catch you downing copious amounts of alcohol I will have no choice but to stage an intervention....you can keep the handkerchief. "

Honestly, what was she going to do with this girl? Ruby seriously needed a keeper. A butler. A shock collar. Something.

However, she would still rather be here with this dolt than trapped at one of the stuffy Schnee functions where she would be watched like a hawk. A rebellious part of her wished she could take Ruby to the next one just to throw off the whole mood and make her family sweat.

clickclickbloom: (ReLEAFING moment)

[personal profile] clickclickbloom 2019-05-12 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't think you have to worry about that. I think Uncle Qrow drinks enough for the lot of us. Besides, it tastes gross anyways." Seriously, How could people even stand that stuff? Ruby shuddered at the thought of having to drink it ever again.

She clutches the handkerchief briefly. It had been well over a month now since she had last seen Weiss. It was refreshing to have some more familiar faces around.

"So is this anything like the fancy parties you had back home? Or are those even worse?" She doesn't like any sort of fancy party.
schneeflakes: (if i could just believe in me)

[personal profile] schneeflakes 2019-05-13 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Good," said the white-haired girl with a shudder. "None of it tastes good. And as for your question, any party that's not in Atlas is automatically a better party."

Weiss cocked her head thoughtfully. "It's actually kind of nice to be at an event where no one knows me or expects anything of me. Though if you wanted to get out of here I would not complain."

As Ruby was clearly not suited to this setting and Weiss had had her fair share of these events she wouldn't actually mind skipping out on this and doing something normal girls did. Whatever that was.
clickclickbloom: (Everything is broken)

[personal profile] clickclickbloom 2019-05-13 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ruby snorted and laughed. "Plus you've got your BFF here to make things way better, right?" Even if she's terrible in heels she's still pretty confident she's better than a bunch of stuck up rich people.

Part of her wanted to bail right then and there, but she understood why Weiss might enjoy a party where she wasn't at her families whims.

"How about we stick around and do some fancy party things for a little, then we can bail out and see if the games are still open?" Best of both worlds brought to you by Ruby Rose, Problem Solver.
schneeflakes: (and i'm losing myself in the storm)

[personal profile] schneeflakes 2019-05-13 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
"If you really want to," Weiss said, doubtfully. "But there isn't a whole lot that go on at these functions besides shallow small talk and sometimes sly shallow talk that's meant to form alliances. Other than that people pretty much eat, drink and dance."

And pretentiously talk about how expensive wine was magically superior even if it tasted awful. And walked around with a totally gracious smile and a cornucopia of compliments until you were gone and they sadly griped about how 'last year's party had so much more effort behind it.' And how those ungrateful faunus were ruining everything for demanding proper compensation for dangerous work.

"Do you even know how to dance?" Weiss raised an eyebrow skeptically.
clickclickbloom: (But time will mend our hearts)

[personal profile] clickclickbloom 2019-05-15 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ruby considered it for a second. Weiss was her resident expert on fancy parties and she didn't seem to thrilled to stay.

"Sounds like the all the more reason to bail. I've already had my fill and I'm pretty much allergic to small talk unless it's with friends." Then she kind of smiled nervously as Weiss gave her that look when it came to dancing.

"Uh... I'm pretty sure you know the answer to that one already. I sure as heck do not." Look. The only dancing she did was on the battlefield.

"Unless you count victory dances. Or little spontaneous dances when no one's looking.

...And there are a lot of people looking here."
schneeflakes: (mind and heart are one)

[personal profile] schneeflakes 2019-05-17 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Weiss rolled her eyes. "Ruby, no one is really looking. If you learn anything at these parties, it's how self focused people actually are. They are more worried about themselves than anything else going on. "

It was adorable how clueless Ruby was. In a way, that actually made her the perfect person to spend time at this sort of thing with. Weiss could experience a ball through someone else's eyes. It almost reminded her that she had been like this once. That she had actually liked these things before she understood what they were about.

She offered Ruby her hand. "Which makes it no better time than now to learn. Come on. Better late than never."
clickclickbloom: (Is far less like a bedtime story)

[personal profile] clickclickbloom 2019-05-18 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ruby folded her arms and pouted slightly.

"Well it doesn't feel like that. It feels like there are like a bajillion eyes on me! All laser focused on why I can't walk in lady stilts or how did she manage to topple over like five chairs and a table just getting to the snack table. It's a lot of pressure!" She let out a sigh, it wasn't easy having silver eyes.

She blinked briefly when Weiss offered her a hand. Her eyes shifted from Weiss' hand to her face then back again.

"You sure? If we topple over you can't blame me even if it's my fault." There was a nervous smile but then she reached over and took Weiss' hand.

"Sure, what the heck. Let's give it a shot."
schneeflakes: (explaining/talking)

[personal profile] schneeflakes 2019-05-20 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"All right," Weiss said, matter of factly as they faced each other. "This is pretty simple. Imagine standing in a square. You'll put put a forward step then move to the side at the 'top' of the square and close. Then just reverse to the bottom side. Back step, side step, close."

The Schnee girl demonstrated slowly, but gracefully. "You'll be doing the opposite step as your partner so that you aren't running into each other. But that's basically the Waltz in a nutshell. No too hard, right?"

She scanned Ruby's face to see if it were sinking in.
clickclickbloom: (Day by day)

[personal profile] clickclickbloom 2019-05-21 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ruby listened intently. It was quite clear that the little gears in her head were going into overdrive to try and get this down. For a second it looked as though she might deflate and give up but then her eyes lightened up.

"So it's kind of like squaring off in an arena, right?" Okay. She was connecting this to fighting. It was the best way she could get her simple mind to connect the dots.

"We've just got to go around in the perimeter of the arena."

Then her eyes followed Weiss' movements. They weren't super complex and they just repeated them. It was kind of like running combat drills. They did this in school all the time.

"Okay. I just have to go opposite of you and try not to run you down with my lady stilts... I think I can do this." She didn't a hundred percent get it but she had found something she could relate it to. That was something.
