the night of wonders.QUICK LINKS
Seemingly overnight, the Guild Hall owned and operated by the Silver Blade is decked to the nines Long streamers and banners are draped and a massive banner has been unfurled across the front of the building. It hails the events of the coming two weeks: The Night of WondersMurmurs abound through the city; a thrill of excitement is in the air, and the locals are delighted to finally have cause to celebrate. The theme of The Night of Wonders is one of rebirth. The people of Mirabar are celebrating the continued survival of their home, the success of taming the Giant Rebellions across Faerun, and their resident adventurers! You are all thanked, profusely, for helping reinvigorate Mirabar with your hard work, and the people of Mirabar want to celebrate with you! Booths have sprung up everywhere, full of food, music, laughter, and joy. Take a trip around the city over the next few weeks or so, and see what you find: there is no shortage of things to do in the riverside city of Mirabar. Especially, it seems, because there are a plethora of new people. Not members of the Circle, but others? It seems that Astoria's grip on the Rift has slipped and other Travelers have found their way to Mirabar, just in time for the festival in question. You have no idea how they got here, but hey -- they're here, right? We may as well enjoy the party. YOU'LL SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT.Like any good festival, there are a ton of street games and vendors to choose from! Try your hand at an archery contest, where a bullseye nets you 1 GP, but playing at all gets you a weird-looking stuffed rabbit. There are also your classic "throw a ball at a bottle" games where they seem awfully rigged. Are those bottles glued down? What a rip-off!
There is also a jousting tournament, which really means sticking a broom between your legs and running at someone with a padded sword. Whoever gets hit first loses! It's mostly meant for children, but the local children will definitely encourage adult Travelers to give it a shot.
Finally, there's no shortage of food to buy -- turkey legs, meat pies, popcorn, sweet cakes, and cotton candy are abound throughout the festival. And of course, plenty of mead. Explore, have fun, and have a blast! ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT; PUNCH, PUNCH, PUNCH YOUR THROATOne of the highlights of the festival is the infamous kayak race -- a hallmark of Mirabar culture and sport. The leather kayaks, handmade by the locals in Mirabar, are beloved and much bragged about, and after a month or so of testing, they are finally ready for the tournament.
Many sign up -- locals, members of the Circle, travelers that have wandered from distant lands . . . but only one team can conquer! So, congratulations to TEAM 1! You have won 100 GP each, a set of three trophies, and and all-you-can-drink voucher at the Dusty Coffer for the duration of the festival! Cheers!
Alternatively, you can also enter in the fighting tournament, set up by a local bunch of rowdy Guild members that just like to punch each other. The fighting tournament is a bit less prestigious than the kayak tournament, but you've still got a bunch of folk who turn up to see who is the best around. Are you a winner, or a loser? Either way, much praise to RUBY ROSE who winds up winning the whole lot! You win 300 GP, and a championship belt that looks like it is made out of gold, but it is definitely not.
Feel free to play out races, match-ups, scuffles, or observation! The winners may be set in stone, but you can feel free to thread out whatever rows or punches to your heart's content.
🡆 Prior to the tournament, you might hear what some of the betting rings have to say...who has their eyes on you? Or is it a friend of yours, by any chance? Looks like word goes around, it could go in any direction.
🡆 The crowd around you is roaring with passion and excitement. They may even get as heated as you do, so try not to let their zealous reactions get the better of you.
🡆 The most you'll get after the tournament is a towel to wipe off your blood, sweat, and potentially tears. If you've been injured, it could be in your best interest to seek medical hel and rest. Or not.
THE CEREMONY OF LIGHTS.Every night of the festival, the people of Mirabar go down to the river's edge with paper lanterns. You can get them by the boatload, for free, provided to every single person who wishes to have one. On these lanterns are tags which you can write whatever you would like.
Should you ask the locals, they say that they write down their hopes, their dreams, and their wishes. Once they do that, they set out into the boats and push them out into the air, to send them to the gods, and pray for proper fortune. You may take out a boat (which are on the river a plenty) if you wish to do so, and participate in the ceremony to your heart's content. But there is something almost solemn, about the ceremony.
These people, clearly, are hoping for an end to conflict, and a continued prosperity to their city.
What do you wish for? PAPER FACES ON PARADE.Finally, at the end of the Festival, there is a massive masquerade in the Guild hall. Everyone is wearing a mask, ranging from basic black to brightly colored with a lot of feathers and jewels. It seems everyone has gotten into the spirit of the Festival, and the locals are intent on partying until the sun comes up.
There is a live band, a lot of dancing, laughter, and joy. There is a massive table of food of every type you can think of, a plethora of wine and ale, and endless merrymaking to be had. Feel free to dance, eat, drink, and celebrate for as long as you desire!
But be sure to go outside at around 11:00 PM, to watch the beautiful fireworks display over the river. You can run out to grab a boat, to watch it on the river proper, or you can watch it from outside the Guild hall. It's a lovely, romantic end to your hard work in Faerun . . . enjoy it, and each other.
🡆 In the heat of the dance, it's likely that you'll be passed from one partner to another. Try to make do with the foreign — or perhaps unexpectedly familiar face that will be greeting you. And try not to get caught in the middle of a slow dance...
🡆 Some of the food and drink offered will serve as a bit of a pick-me-up: the people of Faerun have decided to use their magic to ensure that the party is as enjoyable as can be. So for those who are a bit more on the antisocial, troubled or moodier side, perhaps an enchanted dinner will make the night easier on you?
🡆 Take the boat a tad too far out and you run the risk of getting stranded in the river. The current grows stronger the further down along you go, so do be careful. MOD NOTES.🡆 This is a fourth wall event! Please feel free to tag around and have fun in the festival log! We have a list of reference links at the top of the event post for your reference, if you need help. This log is free for everyone to play on, even characters who are currently not in game.
🡆 A separate log for those investigating the fires referenced in the OOC post will be posted. This log is purely for entertainment and fun for the fourth wall! The fire investigation will be limited to those who showed interest.
🡆 If you have any questions, please ask them on the original OOC post here! This includes fourth wall participants! |

Unfamiliar though the music may be, Vex takes confidence in knowing she can move to the beat, follow the steps required and keep pace with Percival - and really, who is to tell them they're wrong when they're enjoying each other's company when making their turn about the square? ]
It has been a wonderful day. [and a wonderful night, so far.] I can't say too many have been able to hold my attention for long, when there's so many distractions tonight.
[lightly, though the joy in her tone is real:] I saw my brother, too.

[ i know this isn't home, and it's unspoken, the way his eyes meet hers beyond the mask. i know this isn't home, but we have one another and that will do for now. his head lowers a second more before he spins her gently in his arms, turning them back to front so that he can gently sway with her against his chest. his mouth lowers to her ear once more.
in his arms, is the only person who matters in this moment. he'll keep it this way as long as she'll allow. ]
Wherever did you learn to dance so well, Baroness?
no subject
[I've missed him, goes unspoken, because Percy understands. Adjusting to his absence in Whitestone, when he'd been but a message and a tree teleport away, had been difficult for both of the twins. Having him here, for however long it might last, has been a balm to a wound to her soul she'd ignored was there.
Her heart is over full, and the slow winding pace of the music lulls her, easy to follow as she stays in step with Percy, letting herself be led (for once) and spun and held as needed. When he turns her, settling her back against him, there's a contented sigh. If only for this moment, all is right in their world, and she'll stay just like that for as long as he wants to hold her. ]
I found myself a partner who wanted to dance with me. It made all the difference.

be he remains upright, head tipped down only a bit to allow for conversation. ]
You keep up very well with me. [ he says, leaning to press a kiss to her perfectly coiffed hair. ] And I like not having my toes stepped on. It's a bonus.
no subject
I should say the same, I think. You lead very well. [her eyes twinkle behind her mask] Is that truly the only bonus you can think of when it comes to dancing with me?
no subject
Never fear, dear, [ as if she had anything to fear about percy running out of words — unless she happens to catch him at the wrong time. which she does to her advantage on occasion. ] Truthfully? Dancing with you is... an incredibly complete feeling.
[ the steps aren't complicated to this dance, but between the dexterity of them both, they read and take measures against one another's body language. they've worked together for so long, that a twitch of muscle indicates left or right, the faint tension of a jaw means remain still or on the count of three.
he turns her in his arms and places a palm against her back, just enough pressure as he takes her hand and dips her in a swirl of fabric to the music. ] You know me best, [ he murmurs, bringing her up again. ] That knowing cleverness in your eyes, your cunning and your caring both. There isn't anything that you can't do, and there isn't anywhere that I wouldn't follow you.
[ percy smiles, and it is open and warm. ] You're my heart, Vex'ahlia. Entirely.
no subject
And you are mine. [have been, since before she can remember; that knowledge that her heart was his part of a confession that brought him back to her. an earnest truth she'll never hide from again] No matter how far I may fly, know that my wings will always bring me back to you.
[or broom, but that's not quite as poetic, and she IS trying to keep up with that silvery tongue.
As it is, she gives in at last to what she has wanted to do since the dance started: lets her head rest against his check, cheek turned to nestle against his collar bone, tucked neatly beneath his chin. It is a display of intimacy that breaks their unspoke rule, but as far as Vex is concerned, that part of the masquerade can come to an end. ]

percy often finds himself at times to be too scientific to believe in something like "soulmates" or what have you.
but this is. very close to it. precisely it. he doesn't breathe a word of it, but somewhere inside he knows that this must be what it feels like, truly. ] I hope that you never feel as though you're anchored to the ground ever again. [ vex was meant to fly, stolen broom or not. she took to the air unafraid, fall after fall, unwilling to let gravity keep her flat-footed.
but there is the quiet fear that he prays and hopes he will never hold her back, either. he knows that she won't let him, but he wants to be certain. if he could be certain. he decides not to ruin the moment. it is more than enough, after all, and buries his face into the warmth of her dark hair, letting the hand on her back crawl up and curl at the nape of her neck to hold her as they sway. ] You were meant for brilliance, you know that, right?
no subject
[ She knows his doubts and the fears he carries with him, knows the shadows that haunt him. But he has her now, and he need never walk them alone, knows she'll be the first to fight anything that might try and bring him harm. There's a gentle squeeze of his hand in answer to his question, before she looks back up at him. ]
And you are forever brilliant, Percival. So let us be that, together?
no subject
[ his eyes meet hers from behind the mask, a low chuckle resonating in his throat. when has he ever said no to any of her proposals? he can't think of a time as he leans down and seals said promise with a kiss on her mouth. the shape of the masks don't quite fit together, but it doesn't make it too awkward, at least. ]
no subject
[ She is cut off, Percy "stealing" words given freely, and Vex's mouth smiling against his. Whatever awkwardness caused by masks is brief; luck is with them and does not allow the decorations to catch on one another, and their slowed pace is uninterrupted as others twirl around them. So many couples, lost in their own worlds.
Eventually Vex pulls back, delightfully winded. ]
I'm told the lights and the moonlight make the walk along the river quite lovely.
no subject
as she mentions the river, he raises a brow ever so lightly, though behind the mask it's obviously obscured. still, knowing percy, he can make a brow raise audible with just his voice. ]
Are you sure it's just the lights you want to enjoy?
[ a little tell tale sway, just some jostling about as he brings both hands now to skim up her sides and remain just there. ]
no subject
[ which is both an answer, and not. Vex leans into his hands, yet to break stride or break free of his grasp, but she can subtle direct their path to the outer edge of the dance floor. ]
It doesn’t have to just be about what I want. [there is a distinctly Vex wink that follows]
no subject
It's getting crowded in here anyways, [ he says breezily. ] Let's go find the best view, what do you say?
no subject
[ That she can keep her eagerness concealed is a master class in acting; her pulse is quick, but her steps are slow and steady, the last twirls taken across the floor as they slip between other pairs, falling out of view. ]
no subject
Flattery gets you everywhere, [ he chuckles as they move beyond the dancing, percy guiding her with an arm around her waist out and away from the rest of the crowd towards the outside where soft lights dangle and dance, physical and magical, all around. ] Any other view won't matter in the end when I have you.
no subject
I should hope so. [one hand moves to rest over his at her waist, gently sliding fingers to cradle around his, while her free arm moves behind, to rest at his back. All entirely appropriate, of course, but she doesn't rest the urge to lean her head back against his shoulder as they walk together.] It really has been a most lovely night, hasn't it?
no subject
The loveliest we've had in quite a while... I'd say it's quite a nice reward for all that hard work.
no subject
We don't often get a reason to dress up in our finest and dance. We've been overdue. Though perhaps I'm simply spoiled from our heroics in Emon. [they didn't get a parade, but that's okay. this is almost as good.]
no subject
[ the building itself lets them into the cool evening air easily, the lights hanging overhead showing precisely where one might need to go if they were after the river's edge. there are already some people having filtered out from the dancing to make their way there just as well, so percy, takes his time guiding vex along their evening stroll, almost as if parading her.
she deserves it after all, she's the most stunning person here and he's not biased or anything, that's just facts. ]
no subject
[ She's enjoying it, no doubt about that. Vex likes looking fashionable, even if her clothes are always tailored to suit her job. You can't wear a frilly high society dress in the field, after all. But they both clean up very nicely, a well matched pair, and Percy's pride in her always gives her an extra jolt of warmth. ]
I'm glad we were able to attend this. Rather than being rushed back to whatever trial lies next.
[ This, accompanied by a deliberately heavy lean against his arm, into his side. Two lovers taking a stroll in the moonlight. ]
