( the sickness: phase two )

the sickness ends.
the temple.
The Temple, shortly after Astoria's burst of energy, is in a constant state of growth. Trees are bursting into existence from seeds in mere seconds, flowers are growing wherever magic lands . . . and the Temple is abruptly a-buzz with energy, magic crackling throughout the air. You may find a tree in your house, or flowers suddenly growing along the walls, or plants wiggling their way through the stone walls of the buildings of the Temple. All of a sudden, the place looks very overgrown.

The Forest of the Fey seems to be responding in kind, too. Sprites are exceptionally active, darting out of the Forest and into the Temple with increasingly regularity, playing basic little tricks on the members of the Circle they can find. Flower crowns are made at an alarming rate, and there might be a few fruit-food fights that break out with the sudden abundance of peaches and apples that appear on the grounds. Learn how to duck!

With the magic comes the sudden fluctuation of energy: canon powers flicker on and off, as do the powers granted by Astoria. You feel more like yourself, you suddenly have access to energies you did not have previously in the Temple However, it's a double-edged sword -- it is not constant, and it may be more trouble than its worth.

And, remember: the Sickness is not fading immediately. If you make it to Stage 3, then you're stuck with sensory deprivation for at least another week or two. Sorry, friends.

lake dona.
Lake Dona is a massive body of water, stretching outward for so far that it almost seems like an ocean until you see that the water is fresh. It is surrounded by long, leafy trees that dip into the water and has a variety of ancient ruins scattered around it -- weathered stones set into circles at seemingly even intervals, old buildings that seem to mirror the Temple in construct.

In addition to the ruins, there are a network of caverns tucked along the water’s edge, just underneath the surface on the western side of Lake Dona, that appear to go underground into murky darkness. The actual entrance to these caverns seem to be underwater, seemingly guarded by merfolk, but poking around may seem to be more trouble than its worth.

There is plenty of wildlife to be found within the lake itself, ranging from freshwater mermaids who would rather you stay the hell out of their backyard to a rather large and suspiciously friendly plesiosaurus-like creature (some would say that she prefers to be called Nessie) that seems intent on checking out who you are. The lake teems with odd-looking fish, most of which seem to be okay to eat, and plenty of plant life! But who knows what lurks in the depths below . . . that giant sea-monster looking thing has to be eating something.
PROMPT IDEAS: Here are some prompt ideas for this new area! However, don't feel limited to such ideas! Feel free to fish, to explore, to swim, to poke around . . . it's always possible Astoria may check in on your character, too, once she is feeling better! ;)

1.) The Great Pumpkin The overgrowth of plants have caused a massive growth spurt in a lot of the trees, including the fruit trees that sprinkle themselves throughout the Temple. However, the fruit themselves seems to be growing at a rather . . . alarming rate, resulting in a few pumpkin-looking squash growing to the size of small boulders in the fields. Hope you have a lot of spare time on your hands to make a hell of a lot of Temple-pie, because these squash aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

2.) Food Fight!: Those damn sprites are at it again, and are collecting fruit off the ground and throwing it at people. Fight back, organize, and conquer! Or not. It's probably better to just not.

3.) Part Of Your World: The mermaids within Lake Dona are a suspicious lot, and they don't take kindly to strangers stomping through their territory. However, they are receptive to music, so if you are so musically inclined, they will definitely be more inclined to be a little more playful than territorial. If you aren't? Have fun getting tossed into the lake head-first by a bunch of pissed off mermaids who want you to get the hell of their lawn. They don't take kindly to your type around here.

4.) Nessie: Within Lake Dona is a massive plesiosaurus-type creature which seems to be . . . oddly friendly? It seems to pop up at the most inconvenient of times. Are you sitting on the edge of the lake enjoying the water? Enjoy a massive ass dinosaur sticking its impressively long neck out of the lake to check you out and also scare the bejesus out of you. That being said, Nessie is an extraordinarily friendly being, and will even give you laps around the lake if you ask nicely!

5.) Caverns: The caverns within the lake are dark, deep, and menacing The merfolk inform you that you cannot go there -- no one can, but the merfolk sure seem to be keeping a careful eye out on it. Testing the boundaries indicates a weird magical field around the entrance of the cave, that works like a bit of a forcefield. Weird, right?

( please stop tormenting him like this, konoha. please. )

I, uh. ( 'uh' is firebender speak for 'why can't i just sink into the ground right now thanks'. ) I mean... I don't know about comfort. I ride Naga! And that's. That's okay. I mean, it's fine, it's not weird or anything, it's, uh, but I mean... she is... a polar bear dog.

( why is this his life now. he will babysit wu for the next ten years if a meteor just... obliges to hit him. right now.

now?

please?

no takers? )

[personal profile] lumberlady 2018-10-02 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well if it's not weird, then-

[No, wait, maybe she shouldn't ask????

There is sadly no meteor.

But there is a Konoha, and she can't take this anymore!!! There's only one way to make both of them stop talking and that way is getting in the damn water and pretending this never happened!]

Okay! No riding! Let's go!

[Carrying it is. With no further ado, Konoha twists and scoops up the rather tall and fully adult man that is Mako as easily as if he was a sack of potatoes, but like... not that many potatoes, because her muscles are way stronger than a humans despite her looks thanks to that equine anchor, and with a clatter of hooves... she's racing down the pier and then jumping full tilt off into the water!!!]

[personal profile] resistivity 2018-10-02 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
( to his honest credit, mako does not scream like a little girl. he does clutch at... whatever part of konoha is least inappropriate and hang on for dear life, though, as she plunges into the lake. she does get quite a bit of observable air, he thinks distantly, as he wonders what the heck his life has turned into lately.

and then they splash down and surface, mako is. still in her arms. and. she's wet and definitely not wearing a bra, why do horse people have breasts that doesn't seem right or fair and mako just. is pointedly looking Somewhere!! Else!! over the water.

they bob in the water. he coughs. )

Please, uh. Please put me down.

[When they surface Konoha almost headbutts him by accident, but hey, she doesn't, and that's what matters! As if the water has cleared her head she feels much less awkward already, shrugging it off her with a vigorous shake of her head and... the rest of her body parts.

Completely oblivious, (a pale kimono underlayer was still perfectly modest when you're something of a country bumpkin, ok), Konoha first looks back to the dock and tries to measure the distance.]

Ah... I don't think we made it as far as you did with Naga, did we?

[It's a bit disappointing, but she smiles a bit anyway... doing one last playful roll in the water before she releases him.]

[personal profile] resistivity 2018-10-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
( once she lets him go he sort of... minnows (yes, now a verb, thanks!) away from her a yard or two, awkwardly kicking his feet. awkwardly breathing. awkwardly — you know what, he's just awkward right now. in general. it's his default state of being. )

Well, no. But Naga's sort of built for leaping. I wouldn't... you know, I wouldn't take it personally.
lumberlady: (え~と)

[personal profile] lumberlady 2018-10-03 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Why does... he still look so awkward!?

Konoha bobs a bit in the water, thoughtful, before she shakes her head.]

It's fine! It's not a fair comparison anyway, I was carrying all the weight in the front but Naga was balanced, so!

[Its not that she's a sore loser okay it's just that you have to be fair about it!]

[personal profile] resistivity 2018-10-03 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
( he opens his mouth like he's going to mansplain jumping physics to her and then just. closes it again. and laughs. )

Okay, fair. Maybe I could make the dock higher to compensate next time.

( 'next time'. it's actually strange to him how easily he says that, as if there will be more than one day where he lets himself relax and have fun and be playful and kiddish. it's just... easy, around konoha, to exist like that. he's not sitting here thinking about getting back to his room and writing a report on what he's discovered today. )
lumberlady: (かわいい)

[personal profile] lumberlady 2018-10-03 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[Konoha waits, thinking he'd say something else... but then he laughs, and she relaxes all too quickly into mirroring his expression, smile returning all too easily before she swims happily in a loose circle around him before she sort of rolls onto her back.

It's... not the most natural looking position for a centaur, human arms spread wide and equine legs tucked up, occasionally twitching to shift left or right to try and keep herself from rolling back over, but. She looks happy.]

Next time? How about tomorrow?
resistivity: (pic#12538350)

[personal profile] resistivity 2018-10-03 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably not tomorrow. I've got some work I need to do first. Maybe in a few days.

( as fun as it is, duties can't be shirked. not to mention seeing if he can help zuko master lightning in the short moments in time where their firebending aligns.

mako swims back to the edge of the dock, hauls himself up and resumes just sitting on the edge. this time, though, if konoha tries to grab him he is 100 percent ready.

though. she works with lumber, right? )

Speaking of. Do you know how to make paper?
lumberlady: (なんか言った?)

[personal profile] lumberlady 2018-10-03 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
In a few days, then?

[If you say "tomorrow" but then are willing to compromise, it makes them feel better about it, right? They'll keep their promise? Right! Konoha doesn't seem displeased by the answer at all, following behind him at a slower pace in her strange, lazy six-limbed backstroke.]

Paper?

[Huh...]

I've never actually made it, since that's kind of a full time job and I'm no craftsman, but I know how, basically. You need some?
resistivity: (pic#12562407)

[personal profile] resistivity 2018-10-03 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
( you know, maybe he'd find the way she's swimming strange if his world didn't have things like flying bison, or all the spirits roaming around since harmonic convergence. when you wake up in the morning and have to chase tiny glowing sprites out of your teapot, well... your tolerance for what's 'weird' goes up by a lot.

he kicks his feet lazily in the water, watching the way it stirs up. )

Yeah. I'm keeping records on as much as I can, and I'm sure there are artists here that would appreciate having a supply, too. I mean... the next world we go to might have some we can bring back, but I don't want to rely on that, either.
lumberlady: (?)

[personal profile] lumberlady 2018-10-03 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...

[Konoha considers the logistics of what he's asking for a minute, stretching a foreleg out and grabbing it with her hands to pull it closer and examine her hoof. Chipped, she should file it...]

If you want nice paper I could make mulberries and then we could plant the seeds? But it will take a little while to grow enough to harvest... I guess we could search the woods here for something similar? Or just use wood... Do you know what mulberry looks like?

[She finally ends up close to the dock, but she's a bit reluctant to get out just yet, and just ends up pulling a mermaid, leaning up just enough to rest her elbows on the edge and pillow her head on her arms.]

If you or someone else will help me with it I don't mind making it.

( he's a city boy, konoha. anything he knows about the outdoors is just incidental to being an orphan or being on one of his many adventures with korra. he just sort of gives her a blank look at the concept of a 'mullberry tree'. )

Sorry, I'm not much of a... tree... guy.

( he trails off like that's something he only just realized he should maybe be ashamed of. it's not like he has any cause or reason to know, but he doesn't like being ignorant of... well, anything, really. that's more than just a detective thing, it's sunk into his bones. his schooling — or lack thereof — is still something he's sore about. )

But I'd be happy to help, and... learn. Maybe there's someone here who can accelerate the growth of plants.

[Oh... that's right! Konoha laughs a bit, but it isn't cruel, isn't even directed at him, really- more towards herself, for constantly failing to remember that most of the people here didn't know much about farming and village life, when... that was about all she knew.]

Sorry, I keep forgetting everyone is from big cities and stuff. You probably know way fancier things than trees, right?

[She has her own... well, not sore spots, because she doesn't regret her poverty or her lack of education, but she does feel bad for needing to ask people to stop whatever they're doing to read things for her, to write for her. Things like that.]

I'll teach you, no problem. We can just make wood paper for now, and then... see what we can do about mulberries?

( she doesn't say it like she's bitter, but he can still hear an undercurrent of... something there, a whisper at the edge of her cheerful tone. he tips his head to one side and, idly, earthbends a rock into a flat disc that he then proceeds to skip (carefully, minding the mermaids) across the water. )

Well, yeah. But you take a smart city guy out of a city, and there's not much he can do in the middle of a jungle.

( he's smart and resourceful, and he read a lot of books, so he's often managed in situations where other people with his upbringing may have stumbled, but. he also knows he's the exception rather than the rule. he shrugs. )

Sure. I'd love to learn. We can ask on the network if it becomes an issue, I'm sure other people would be willing to help.

Well you would have been really useful the last place we went to. I didn't know anything there.

[She really, really hopes they don't end up in another place like Struxta, geez... And not just because she had spent most of it terrified.

Reluctantly, Konoha sighs, not wanting to leave the water but knowing she probably should get back to working, slowly beginning to drag herself out, leaving a sopping trail behind her as she begins to wring out her soaked under-kimono, revealing flashes of... some rather impressive abs, despite her contrasting sweet face.]

That's a deal, then. You taught me curry, so, I'll trade you paper.

( stop thirst-trapping him, konoha. he's vulnerable to women with muscles!! mako just. POINTEDLY LOOKS AWAY. )

You know more now than you did then, right? That's worth something.

( he's not exactly an optimist. it's a pragmatic way of thinking — the mistakes she may have made before won't be repeated. he shakes water out of his hair, ending up with it slicked up slightly, and then he puts his fingers to his mouth to whistle for naga, who has... dived off somewhere to catch fish. she pops her head up a few hundred yards away from the dock, and starts swimming for mako. he leans back on his hands as she cuts through the water, obviously a creature in her native element. though he does pause politely at the edge of the dock to make sure konoha isn't about to freak out!! )

All right. I'll look forward to that.

( he always has liked learning new things. )

[WHAT IS THIRST TRAPPING? At least he says something nice, she appreciates that.

It's good that he looks away though, cause it spares him from getting water all over his face as Konoha sort of squares her stance... and gives a full body shake ala her more equine cousins, sending water flying all about. That's the best she can do for now, but- that's what the sun is for, she'll dry out.]

Me, too, then! I'll call you on the watch thing!

[She waves her goodbyes... and just to be polite herself, she. Waves at Naga. Bye, big intimidating polar bear dog... you're not so bad.]
